Hi Guys,

I just started to fold again after a 2 year break. I installed the latest version of folding@home and chose "Full" as the setting. when I run GPU-Z i noticed my GPU usage for folding is hovering around 25-40% I have a 7870 with the 13.4 drivers. How can I get folding@home to use the gpu fully? I am also folding on a AMD 6100 as well.

There's a new GPU core out that utilizes AMD cards a whole lot better than the old one, but it hasn't been released to full FAH yet, only making it as far as advanced, so a fresh install will just get the old, inefficient core. To set your client to advanced:

Open Advanced Control from the systray icon. Select Configure, go to the Slots tab, highlight the GPU slot, press Edit, then at the bottom add the Extra Slot Option client-type:advanced, and finally select OK/Save as needed.

Starting with the next WU you should get something from project 8900, 7810, or 7811. If you don't you may want to change the client-type to beta instead of advanced. Currently Nvidia cards set to advanced are getting a large mix of old-core WUs, but beta seems to almost exclusively get the new core. I don't know if this is at all the case for AMD.

Note that you'll see some large variations in the GPU usage with the new core. Every 2% completed it does a lot of error checking while it's writing its checkpoint, and during this time the GPU usage drops to 0%. This is normal and standard behavior. The rest of the time it should be running at near 100%.

thanks, will try it out once I get home from work. Are AMD cards still offering more PPD compared to Nvidia?

AMD is a bajilionty times better than they used to be, now that OpenCL is being used. As far as a direct comparison? IDK because there doesn't seem to be a single comprehensive listing as of yet. and things might change by the time of official release.

With the way that the 7000 series AMD cards sip power, I just recently grabbed a cheap 7790 just for folding.

what's the output ppd-wise on a 7790. I haven't seen numbers on anything besides 7970's.

Methinks somebody messed up his shoulder from patting himself on the back. :p
