GPU usage alternative?

Could you give some followup info? I'm not that familiar with ATi cards

i remember reading some thing about GPUs being used for Sound processing a year or so ago

I've heard about this as well. The GPU can be used to process very high quality sound...

Has anyone heard anything else besides this? Seems like the GPU could have a very large potential for other things...
During a demonstration of Crossfire ATI displayed an interesting demo which put the Crossfire cards to an alternative use. As opposed to having the Crossfire boards increasing performance by distributing graphics workloads across the two ATI has a demo with wave simulations that could be fully calculated on the CPU, have the CPU calculating the physics and the graphics rendering the image, or moving the rendering to one board and the physics of the wave simulation to the second graphics board, effectively turning it into a physics co-processor.
no need for rolling eyes

Does any type of folding make use of the GPU?

I'm interested in the idea of having the GPU as a second processor....

GPU's doing physics calculations? That would kind of sink AEGIA before they even got off the ground, wouldn't it?

Because we all want our GPU to do Physics and not graphics. I mean all that calculated, but not displayed physics is so cool, you can guess at what you are aiming at, and yell about if you hit the other guy or not.

Well, if I had the choice of buying a dedicated physics card, or having my GPU do it for free, I know which I would choose. :p

Maybe it's good to have competition (similar to ati vs nvidia) but if they can do similar things in terms of physics what would you prefer? $150 X1300pro or $250 aegia ppu

True, if you already had a 2nd video card. But it looks like the card can either do physics or do video. Also I doubt it would get the same kind of performance. (still better than CPU though I would think)

Well, requiring a second video card to do other types of processing kind of ruins it for me. Still it would be nice to see that massive parallel processing power used more often then just for graphics.

:) Excellent

Almost exactly what I was looking for...now I need to find some developers :p
Or if I can find the time, get something going myself :)
Hopefully someone else has aspirations to somehow integrate this into folding and other distributed computing......

I don't know how others stand to have an expensive card sitting idle. Or maybe most of you just game 24/7 :D
