Last June (2012) I built a system with 2 Asus 680 GTX SLI. I understand that in 2013 a new range of GPUs is coming out (700 series).
Should I upgrade in 2013 or should I wait for Maxwell in 2014?
 
Actually a new line is coming in 2014 so you should just upgrade then.

wait for maxwell the gk114 will only be 15-20% faster its like the upgrade from the 480 to the 580 its not worth it unless you can sell your 680s and upgrade to the 780 for under 200 dollars

SLI 680s will last you all next year and then some.


next year i'll just get a used 670 from [H] and SLI it will last the entire year for new games.

why? he doesnt even need to do that. he has SLI 680s.

unless he is at 5760 + there is absolutely no need. even then itd still be silly imho
 
Unless the PS4 or Xbox 3 arrives there'll probably be about half a dozen games next year which will give those cards grief and only on multiple screens. Honestly, what's the point? It's like having an F1 car but you can only drive at legal speed limit...
 
let's not forget we don't have any games from 2013 yet either!

Seriously OP, wait until you find a game that your 680 SLI can't play smoothly. Then upgrade.

Well what happens if one 780 is more than double the performance of SLI 680's? And what happens if in May 2013, 10 games come out that bring 680's to their knees? (kinda like what Crysis 1 did when IT came out).

Prove to me without a shadow of a doubt that it will not happen.

You cant.

So lets wait till then to find out if you want to upgrade or not, simple.

nvidia or amd would never release a gpu that had double the performance of the previous generations. It would cannibalize the sales of the GPU's from the previous generation that had yet to be sold. Nor is it really possible.

But maybe a game will bring sli gtx 680 to their knees... Crysis 3?

Who knows.

The best way to future proof is to not future proof.

has there ever been a flagship card that doubled the previous generation 1v1 ? let alone sli vs 1. probably not dude.

granted we are both speculating, but that remark is outrageous and highly unlikely
 
If by selling my 680s I'll have to spend 200/300£ for the 780s, then I might think of upgrading. If I upgrade I'll keep my 2 way SLI! Any thoughts?
Just to give you some background, I'm playing at 1080p with AA 8x.
... And I don't like Crysis... :)
Let me know if you are interested in 2 ASUS 680 at 300/330 British Pounds each in 8 months!

At 1080p, yeah its not even worth it. Shrug.
The OP could at least buy 2 more monitors and run surround...... then maybe could recommend an upgrade... :D

This just in: the newest line of video cards will probably be 15% faster then the old line. You should defiantly spend $500+ for the new one, just for the cool factor.

i dont even know what to say... first off that will never happen cause nvidia, even if they had the tech, wouldnt release something that powerful compared to this gens card.

Secondly, the largest jump in performance jump of vid card ive seen these past couple years have been 8800 to GTX 280 and that was because of an architectural overhaul... and mind you GTX 680 to GTX 780 is not an architectural change theyr just adding a memory controller to the gpu thats about it... which translates to about 15-20% more bandwidth and maybe theyll fit in some faster memory... so if that rumor is true then next gen cards will not be worth it performance wise unless you can sell your current gen cards and split the cost to around 200 dollars other than that i dont think its worth it...
 
OP if you have the money and if your card sells more power to you and i say upgrade... but if not i say stick with your 680s since your pc will still be faster than any next gen console that is predicted to come out and faster than the majority of computers out there... I myself will be going sli next year when 6xx series gets major price cuts
 
For most people 1 680 would be fine for the next couple of years...With 2 I dont think you would have the need to upgrade. Unless you have the money and just have to have the latest card out I would stick with what you have for a while.

Too give you a little more of a background, 2 days ago I felt a bit disappointed while playing BF3, Crysis 2 and even Dishonored With 8x AA and 4x SGSSAA. The overall performance was a bit of a let down, with FPS touching the mid 40s.
This raised concerns about the near future... :(

Have you checked to see what your CPU/GPU's are at % wise when playing the games?

Run a game that you feel lags while running cpu/gpu software that has the max % and note when it lags and see what is happening.
Maybe my research suks, but I found that 1 680 works really good at 1080p max detail, 2 680's would just be overkill. Drivers(sli), cpu, some other software problem, not sure.
