Hello everyone and thank you for your time. I have an HP Phoenix H9-1350: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03518194&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en

I am upgrading from an XFX HD 7870 DD to an XFX R9 280x DD(just ordered today). I was wondering if my PSU can power this system with no problems. Here's what I found out about the PSU from HP, but im a noob, so I'm not sure what to think: Petrus 600W e-star V5.0 Bronze.

A guy at Tom's said yes and someone on HP's forums said no. I figured I'd ask the pros on this site as well.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Yep, youll be just fine. A single 280X will draw around 300-400 max total system draw at the wall which would easily be handled by even a low bidder power supply like the one in your HP.

ok, thanks...after reading all day, i just wasnt sure...i did find a couple of reviews online that used this same r9 280x from XFX and their systems drew a total of 440 watts and they were using i7-3770ks and 4770ks with an SSD and optical drives. So, my i7-3770, non k, with a 2TB HDD, 16GB cache drive and dvd writer should be cool? The case does have a couple of red LEDs in it, but im assuming they dont use much power at all.

You're good, but if when you upgrade again you might consider replacing it. Those PSUs are typically on the lower end of the spectrum as far as quality is concerned.

ok...ill give it a shot...oh, just in case, how would I know if the PSU isnt gonna work out BEFORE my system fries itself?

I would upgrade that PSU. A good quality 500-550W is is big enough. There are plenty of recommendations floating around the site. I have the Seasonic G Series SSR-550R and works wonderfully powering a GTX 780.

If the PSU doesn't have enough juice to power your system, it'll just shut down. It is possible to damage some components with too low a voltage but I don't think you'll have to worry about that. Even a quality 450 watt PSU could handle a single 280x so a sub par 600 want PSU should have no problem.

ok, thanks...a rep at HP sent me this link to a PSU after telling me that it wasnt gonna work with my stock build...thoughts? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139051&ignorebbr=1

Yeah, I would say that PSU is bad news no point i ngetting a good graphics card with a bad psu, and it looks to not even have PCIe connectors on it so thats a no go

and the HP rep recommended the same psu I would recommend

So I'd go with that corsair

This thread reminds me when I suggested to my friend to upgrade his video card in his HP midtower to a Radeon 5770. He had a 300W power supply and we ended up upgrading it to a 500W one for the card.

He now runs a GTX 750 Ti and is pretty happy with it.

Also, many of these HP towers have the worse internal space and hardware placement.
