After the release of the new 69xx cards from AMD I am even more confused about which card to purchase.
Let me explain my situation.
I have a 27" Full HD monitor, a Q6600 @ 2.7GHz and a Corsair 650W PSU. All this is paired with a HD4870 512MB. I don't have a Crossfire motherboard so that is out of the question.
I play at the moment Starcraft2 and World of Warcraft, but in the future I want to be able to play Diablo 3 and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I am pretty strict about IQ and resolution and don't
really like to play at lower than maximum quality settings and in no way I want to lower the resolution. At the same time I would like a graphics card that will consume less power than my current
one seeing that in the 2 years I have it the power bill increase could have let me buy another 4870. The other problem is that I think my CPU will limit the available choices.
And another deal breaker, this purchase should keep me from upgrading for 2 years.
So what would you do?
 
Power consumption will not cost you very much, at most $30 a year from a 5870 to a 580, but if that is one of your considerations, get a 6950. It's power consumption is similar to the 5870s, which is in turn only 20 watts at most more than the 4870s. It will also have much less consumption at idle, which is what you are doing most of the time, so it should not negatively impact your electricity expenses. And it should easily handle 1080p for the foreseeable future.

TLDR: I recommend you a 6950.

I wish that was true here in Romania. In the 2 years since I bought the 4870 the power bill increase got to a total of ~200$. Since I usually game, browse the web or watch HD movies my 4870 is running at almost max speed all the time and the bad thing is that its showing its age in games. So considering the performance benefits of the 6950 and idle/average power consumption I think I will go for that.
