So I stumbled across this:

... boils down to $620 CDN price tag before the $60 USD MIR ($30 each card), including taxes and shipping. Grand total: $560 and change for crossfire 6950 with XFX double-lifetime warranty. This would be an upgrade from my current single card 285, paving the way for Skyrim, Arkham City, BF3, MW3, etc.

Currently running a 850w PSU and a stock i7 920 D0 (begging to be OC'd) and Win 7 64-bit. The MIR is only good until the 15th so I gotta get 'er done if I'm gonna. Thoughts?

Might your video setup be overkill for your i7-920, especially without overclocking? Not that overkill is a bad thing :D
 
Yes, certainly! Very rarely are all my components worthy of one another at any point in time. It's how I do. :D

Chances are I'll be upgrading the board/CPU in the near distant future, long before I consider stepping up to a new GPU config. When it comes to video, I tend to buy big and milk it for 2-3 years. I'll definitely be pushing the CPU once I have a video card worthy of the effort.

EDIT: Actually, my P6X58D Premium could handle a 32nm, provided the gains are worth the investment.
 
I'd go with something from the Nvidia camp. Better value for the money. As it stands now, even though AMD's cards are cheaper, in several recently released games the drivers, especially crossfire support, have been game breaking. You cant consider a card a good value when so many new releases simply dont work right. Nvidia gets proper drivers out on release day or before, AMD you wait.
 
Well, not they don't, they just don't make quite such a bad job. Within a week or so I expect most of the issues with skyrim to be fixed. Nvidia hardware, especially the GTX580 is excessively overpriced.
 
Well the drivers do have to be taken into consideration for the most part nvidia drivers are better all around. But waiting a few days for updates never killed anyone

But the gtx580 is overpriced at the moment so I'd say no to that.

Though not very heavily tested I'd say take a look at GTX 560 Ti 2Win it seems to have some beef.
 
Not really, they both have their ups and downs. AMD drivers are bad, but nvidia's are no better.

If AMD's drivers are bad and Nvidia's are no better than wouldn't that make AMD's drivers either good or at least par, considering amd and nvidia are the only 2 video cards drivers on the market.

Personal opinion does plays a part in some of this but it is true that in most cases nvidia seems to be able to put out updates for new games and fixes issues faster and more effectively than AMD. Just like in most cases AMD has more bang for your buck in terms of raw performance. Exceptions to these generalities do apply.
 
Something can still be the best of its kind, yet bad. Graphics drivers are universally poor compared to other software.
