GPU Upgrade (HD5450->HD5750) Bottlenecks?

your celeron dually will bottleneck that 5750 somewhat, but that's not the problem. the problem is you can get much better cards at that pricepoint. for instance:

for your setup i would recommend a 5670:

still a good 4-6x faster than the 5450 at a much lower price, while only being 20-30% slower than the 5750.

should allow you to improve your graphical settings, though a cpu upgrade would boost your performance immensely as well.

The plan is for the GPU to be a bridge, as CPU upgrades for LGA775 (other than used/eBay) are pretty much a non-starter (especially with Ivy Bridge eventually forcing LGA1155 down in price - it may well be the only item that isn't a drive to transfer to the next build).

Also, unless something changes rather spectacularly in terms of future game releases, I don't plan on adding any of the upcoming games of 2011 to my must-play (or even play-often) list.

The other issue is that the price spread between HD5670 and HD5750 (or even HD5830) is not even close to as large as it was just six months ago.

The spread between HD5670 and HD5750 isn't even $10USD at Newegg; the spread betweeen HD5670 and HD5830 is *exactly* $10USD. Now, if there were PSU reasons, HD5670 might have had a leg to stand on; however, given an adequate power supply, the spread is too small, and the benefits too great, to settle for the lower-end GPU. (Had I not done a recent PSU upgrade, the HD5670 could well have remained in contention.)

The Sapphire HD5770 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102898) commits the twofold *sin* of having fewer stream processors than the HD5830 *and* costing $10 more. Worse - the power draw difference between HD5770 and HD5830 is little to none.
 
considering how well you always claim your 5450 plays games even a 5670 will max every game at 1080 with AA...

your cpu would certainly keep a 5750 or better from performing at its best.
 
PG, look again. your link for the 5670 isn't even the cheapest one on newegg. the one i linked on my last post is going for $70 before $10 m-i-r. that's a $40 gap, not $10, so i still stand by my recommendation. otherwise, the best card to get right now around $100 is the sapphire 5830 (or galaxy gtx 460 768mb if you want to deal with a $50 m-i-r), bottleneck concerns notwithstanding.

I don't rely on rebates, as all too often (even with Newegg) there are too many hoops to jump through (look at the various reviews on the Egg having to do with MIR issues), which is why I won't take them at face-value. Instant Savings are one thing; mail-in rebates (especially manufacturers' mail-in rebates) are all too often a horse of a different color altogether. That is why I always compare pre-rebate pricing when comparing prices at e-tailers (and especially the same e-tailer).

Admitted - with a midrange GPU, a dual-core would be a bottleneck (and, in fact, should be, if the game were coded in a sensible fashion).

However, if it weren't, I'd seriously have to wonder how badly the game was coded, as a dual-core/midrange GPU combo would basically peg the game - not a good thing for even a AA title, let alone a AAA-style FPS.

However, with the *only* game of this year on my current playlist being Brink (which is far from a CPU or GPU killer) a dual-core CPU/HD5750-or-HD5830 combo should tide me over until something like i5-K becomes a reasonable option as far as an upgrade goes. The rest of my playlist dates back to 2010 or even earlier - thus, not exactly titles that would be pushed by E3400/HD5750.

One problem there - there are actually DX11 features that I use (not necessarily related to gaming) that HD4xxx does not support at all. Therefore, HD4xxx would be one step forward and two steps back.
