GPU temp

I have a HIS x1650xt AGP card and as of lately I've notice quite a bit of green/red dots on my screen. I thought it was the monitor so I bought a new one but they were still there. They can randomly appear on the screen or they can appear in rows and are only visable on dark backgrounds. I decided to put a house fan running on my GPU to drop it down to below 45c and they go away and everything is peachy. If I don't have the fan blowing on it the temp rises to 50c and I get the dots. Is it normal for the GPU to artifact at only 50c?? I placed an order on newegg for a new 120mm fan to install on the case to blow on the card but I don't know if that'll fix the problem permanently or not because I'm sure it gets hotter after playing a game (btw the 50c is idle in windows).

If it was a new card, no, it wouldn't be normal. But over time the card can start to flake out, so that even lower temps like 50c can cause artifacting to appear. Do you use the computer heavily with 3D apps and for long periods of time? It may just be overuse and the card can't take it anymore.

The 120mm fan will probably alleviate the problem for a little while, but then you'll start seeing artifacting at the new lower idle temperature. No matter how cool you get the idle, eventually artifacting will show up near the end of the cards life.

Bang on in my experience, hardware has to be quite old though.

Believe it or not, its only a year old... I bought it back in February of last year. The thing that annoys me is that my 9800 pro lasted me 4 years but this thing only lasted a year before it started to flake out :(.

True, but every so often you get a dud card that works great for a while, but then you hit some marginally high temp and some component on the card just can't take it. Something like one of the ram chips fails, and you might only get crashes when that ram chipped is tapped for use.

I'm in the same boat as the OP right now. My current 8800GTX is starting to flake, and I assume it was because it got a bit too hot during a long session of Age of Conan during one of the hot summer days were having right now. The card still works great in 2D, and can run 3D for a decent while, but it hits a certain point and the card just freaks, the game crashes, and then XP can't even render 2D during the same session because the card doesn't respond. It doesn't get all that hot either, but in it's current state getting much above 70C causes it to start flaking out.
