Hey guys,

I'm a long time console gamer and I've been thinking recently of using my PC for gaming as well.

I'm looking for a card that can give me the maximum possible performance that my entire system can handle because I won't be upgrading for a long time after I get the GPU, i.e to the limit that my CPU/rest of my system would hold back the performance if I wanted an even better video card.

I'm not in a hurry so waiting for a specific video card to be released is not a problem. Cost ain't a problem as well as long as I won't be changing the rest of my PC's hardware (excluding adding stuff such as additional RAM). I don't have a personal preference towards either nVidia or AMD, so both are fine.

Here are my PC's specs (I built it in Nov 2010):

- Core i7 930 CPU, running @ stock speeds at the moment.
- Noctua NH-D14 cooler, hopefully will be able to overclock the CPU to 4+Ghz sometime in the future.
- ASUS Sabertooth X58 motherboard
- AX850 Corsair PSU
- Corsair XMS3 6GB 1600mhz DDR3 RAM
- Cooler Master HAF X case
- Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
- Temp GT 220 GPU

Monitor:

- 1080p 50" 5020FD Pioneer Kuro, will probably use this along with my HT setup and either a PS3 controller (if stable drivers are available) or 360 pad.
- Possible high resolution monitor (2560x1600) in the future.

Games I'm interested to play so far in max settings:

FFXIV which from what I've heard is a pretty demanding game when it comes to hardware requirements
Elder scrolls V
Fallout 3
SSFIV AE (card must not cause input lag)
..etc

Any help would be appreciated.

Unlocked and OCed 6950. If later you upgrade to Eyefinity or 2560 x 1600, it'll probably handle 2560 and you can get another one for Eyefinity.

Welcome back to the world of real gaming. :D

I have to agree XacTactX, an 6950 2gb unlocked and oced will do you wonders. I just bought a 6950 myself with 3x 24's for eyefinity, and it's awesome. Yes there are some eyefinity woes with the desktop and gadgets, other than that it's awesome. And this is coming from a long time nVidia owner.

I thought I read somewhere that AMD had fixed this unlocking "loophole" in the newest batch if 6950's. Any truth to that?

I heard that rumor too, but a lot of people in that thread were quick to jump it and say it was false. Can't find the thread though...

Just post what model you are looking at and we can tell you.

I like the 6950 2gb for what you want.

I got a galaxy 480 gtx soc for $230. That is b/c I play BFBC2 95% of the time and that card is a bit smoother in the series.

A 6950 2gb will last a good long while for the games you are playing.

Thanks a lot for replying all,

I've been doing some research and it seems like a single GPU card will be more suitable for my needs (I'm not interested at the moment in using multiple screen setups and would like to avoid driver issues as much as possible, i.e I wouldn't need specific drivers so both GPUs would function and stuff like that, plus I read a while ago that multi GPU setups could cause input lag, that's a pretty big disadvantage to me).

So it seems like these are the best single GPU cards in the market today:
nVidia 580
nVidia 570
AMD 6950
AMD 6970

Since the cards that are better than those have dual GPU setups (590/6990), I'm not very up to date when it comes to graphic card news, but is there any talk about either nVidia or AMD releasing a Single GPU card that will beat the ones I mentioned (580/6970)? or will multi GPU cards be the standard for high performance cards from now on?

I know someone who is upgrading from a 9800.... His first research has pointed him towards a 550, but I think he would be bettter off going with either a 465 or a 470 - its a little over his bugdet, but wouldn't my suggestion be a better way to go? Thoughts? Woops - I kinda thread stole, but it is technically applicable for you as well metallica :)
