So, I've got my battleship pc torn down and in storage..
I've thought about rebuilding and maxing the motherboard.
I've got:
Asus A8n32 sli
Opteron 165 (ran at 2.5 ghz from 2004 til 2015)
2gb OCZ Platinum

I stopped getting output from the gpu and tore it down after installing a gtx275 and seeing that it still didnt work.

I thought about hunting for the best gpu, or pair of gpus for the system to see if I could get it all working.
Then, if it works, hunt down 2 more gb ram and possibly an opty 180.

I honestly think the motherboard is shot.. but maybe it's worth saving. I did everything on this box.

My problem is, I dont know how far up the gpu ladder an old opteron could go.
Would I be looking for 9800s? 8800s?
AMD of some sort? Can I go higher?
I had 7800s in it when it stopped working but it should be able to do better.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

I'd say a 9800 or an 8800. I have a Asus A8n SLI SE. I'm using a 7950 GT KO in mine.

Also, I have a GPU up for sale right now, its a ATI Radeon X1950 512MB. And if you're looking for a new Processor I have a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ for sale also. Check the Ebay section here to see my ad.

You may want to see if a new CMOS battery will fix your issue. Clear the Cmos with the jumper and pull the CMOS batter with the power off. Should be a CR 2032 3v.

Well, depends more on the OS support for your motherboard than anything. I wouldn't necessarily look for older GPU just because you have older hardware. As long as it's PCI, the hardware will work, it's just a matter of finding driver support for your OS.

For instance, if your running XP, I believe up to Maxwell (900 series) on nVidia will work with the last XP driver. For AMD, some of the 200 series supports XP, I assume the 7000 series before it did.

I have the exact same mobo, running a A64X2 4200+ - 4Gb of RAM and a Evga 9800 GTX KO with W764, and it runs great.

I also have an a8n sli and 3200+ in the closet... as well as 1gb Corsair ram
Lol.
That was my original build back in the day. IIRC my ps2 ports got broken so i had to upgrade the motherboard...

I was thinking I'd go for a bfg 8800 or 9800 myself
I don't remember the ati equivalents.. haha

Originally I had xp pro 32bit and a gtx 275 wouldn't boot but an old 6600 would...
I never made it to os on the 275, had a black screen.
I really think the pci slot is shot.. But it didn't work in the other slot either...
If I could get a 2gb card in there and manage to emulate ps2 I'd be so happy

If I rebuild it, I'll probably either run Linux and/or 7x64.

Would be a cool decorative piece to run old PlayStation and such on.

You can not just stick any gen card like a 8800GT into that pci - express 1.0 as there was major issues as pci 1.1 had issues running pci 2.0 cards,, I think like 8800 gts 320Mb to 8800GTX is the end of the road for your mobo, I do still have some old cards like 7900GT and 8800GTS 320Mb and 8800GT if you can't find anything..

but if it was me ! I would take my ass to Best Buy and pick up that gaming rig on sale $699 with Ryzen 1400 and 580RX 4Gb under the hood.

I have an A8NSLI Premium with FX-57 and 2 GB Corsair ram and a GTX 950 2GB using PCIe 1.1 x16 on Win10 32bit. Works fine (as in, it works as good as expected for an 11.5 year old system with 1 CPU core and 2 GB memory). The GTX 950 is overkill, TBH.

LoL, i don't need a gaming system.
I have a 4790k, 16gb, fury nano setup.
I was hoping to upgrade to Vega because of the sr-iov hype.. but AMD shot that down so IDK what I'm gonna do now.

I'll see what happens in the next month or so, i may take you up on a 8800.

I wonder if the 950 or maybe a 4gb 960 would run a ps3 emulator when matched with a dual core opteron and 4gb ddr1...

My old AMD 3800X2 is still running as I give it to my father in-law years ago and he uses the darn thing everyday for web , still have a FX5900XL also but It may have been more of an Intel issue as I was running socket 775 when the 8800GT was released and it was a nightmare for everyone that bought that card for old PCI express sockets.

If you really want those ps2 ports back, SIIG JJ-PA0012-S1 would do the trick if you can find one.
