Noticed on Anandtech they were talking about THe R580 having some sort of flip socket on the card and nvidia a motherboard based one

Just wondering what people think of this and what it could do for the future

However, your ATI video card will most likely come with a socket flip chip from ATI. Unlike the NVIDIA socket prototype we commented about yesterday, the R580 socket is geared specifically for a PCIe graphics adaptor, rather than a motherboard-housed GPU socket.

However it seems memory wont be interchangable

i think its a good idea but am not sure how well it would be supported

hasn't nvidia used flip chip technology before on their gf4s? i don't think that you'll be able to remove the gpu or anything like that, it's just the way they are made.

No. The closest thing they did was make actual removable graphics cards for notebooks. They tried pushing a standard almost no company accepted.

Isnt something liek that still bumbling along

MXM? for notebooks anyway

Yeah, but I can't remember what they called it. The dumb part was they seperated the removable cards into three tiers. A low, medium and high end. Which made no sense to me because you could only upgrade within the same class of adapter the unit came with. Retarded in my opinion. They needed to be universal. One socket, for all mobile GPU's.

Now, going with flip chips, will be an awesome thing for notebooks. It will possibly allow for ugpradable GPU's.

Only problem seems to be the not being able to upgrade the memory

But still it could lead to a much cheaper upgrade path

Once they get over their initial price premium
