GPU + single vs SMP?

My rig currently has a x1950 pro and a amd x2 4200+ with 2 gigs of ram.

I was curious if I should run the gpu client + a regular client, or if I should just run the SMP client, and if there was anything I needed to do special for the SMP client.
 
I hear the GPU client requires one core as it doesn't run solely on the GPU, so many have stated that the SMP client would not yield you anymore points maybe even less than the standard client.

I dont know where you heard that but the SMP clients runs at roughly 4-5x the PpD of standard clients.

The GPU + standard client combo should net you around 900 PpD.
The exact figure depends on if you overclock the vid card & which protien you get on the standard client.
That about the numbers I was getting when I used that combo of clients with a similar setup.

The SMP client should get you around 1,100 PpD.
My 250's @ 2.4 ghz drop ~1180 PpD with quick protiens.
The slow protiens only run at ~900 PpD but they are rare at the moment

Power.
The SMP + CPU combo will pull around 240 watts.
The SMP combo will pull around 160 watts.

Where possible run the SMP client as it will give you slightly higher points for a lot less power used.

my X2 4800 runs ~1200 on fast SMP proteins, and ~700 on slow proteins --- real bummer to get them, but they aren't particularly common, so give or take, it's probably averaging around 1000 PPD....if you had MAYBE optimal WUs on Client + Video, you could come close or match the SMP, but honestly, you'd be better off just running SMP

 
I'm going to team my X1900XTX with a single core Athlon 64. If you've got a dual core, I wouldn't bother with the GPU client, just run SMP.

Most of the guys running Linux through VMware are using a quad care. For a dual core the difference between the windows SMP client and running VMware and Linux is minimal. I would just run the windows SMP.
 
i dunno, i'm getting ~200 PPD difference in linux vs. windows. that said, i'm running linux alone in a dual boot, rather than through VMWare.

Just run the smp ;)

natermeister is doing the right thing for his setup, and schenksmill is correct about differences in certain WUs. Some are very cache dependent and the points can take a serious swing :eek: He is also correct in the straight up difference in production between linux and windows folders in a real world config. I'm not sure how a vm instance of linux smp stacks up against a windows client (each run through windows).

Fellas? Please offer examples...WU-windows/WU-WMware-in Windows.
