I need some help in determining what could be causing the slow frame rate in my system.

Some background first...

I have a pretty old system, it's an Intel quad core CPU, one of the first ones that came out in 2007/2008. The CPU is paired with an Intel mobo (dg33tl) with one PCIe (V1.0) slot. It also has 6gb RAM. I have been able to play most of the games that I've been interested using an EVGA 8800GT (512mb) video card. I tried playing Max Payne 3 last week and the frame rates were horrible when there was anything more then just Max in the scene (ex: one bad guy slows the game down).

So I plunged in and purchased a Gigabyte GTX670 card (with the factory overclock), installed it, and I got the same result... Slow framerates whenever I engage in combat.

Could it be the slow throughput on PCIe v.1.0? I don't know what else to try... I tried a beta driver (304?) from Nvidia's website, but still no luck. I get slow framerates even with every detail turned down.

Can anyone help me troubleshoot this issue?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Is your cpu overclocked at all?

I'm gonna say that your bottlenecked by your cpu for sure. Can you get a sandy bridge cpu/mobo/ram combo. I would recommend a i5 2500k with a motherboard and at least 8GB GDDR 3 ram.

Good luck

what settings do you have enabled on mp3? sounds like a bottleneck to me but you should be checking the GPU and CPU usage to determine that better

CPU utilization at 50% seems low for a Q6700 in your configuration based on this info. I would suggest pulling up task manager during play and see what's sucking up CPU time outside of the game. You might also try setting the game's priority to "high" and see what happens there as well. Also, check out GPU utilization and see where it's at. In all likelihood, you're bottlenecked by the CPU but, it still seems pretty strange

I will take a look at the CPU utilization again tonight. I did notice once that it jumps up to 100% but only during the Rockstar loading screen... I will check again tonight... Thank you all for your help.

With a GPU usage of around 40%, I highly suspect a bottleneck on the CPU side of things. The CPU just can't push out the necessary information to the graphics card fast enough.

Try overclocking the CPU if you can, even by a couple hundred MHz and see if anything improves at all.

What other games do you play that give you different results? I haven't played Max Payne 3 yet and I haven't really been paying attention to it at all, curious if their porting got any better.

Running that card at PCIe 1.0 probably isn't helping things either. Might be time to look into a CPU/motherboard/RAM upgrade.

what resolution are you gaming on also what output you useing for your monitor to connect to your card?

My CPU usage is around 45%. I just checked it. It will jump to 60% sometimes.. but it stays around 40%. I have tried on 1280x720 and then I just tried 1680x1050 which is my monitor's native resolution. I seems as though it's running the same with the two resolutions. It's alittle better with the beta driver but still not great. RAM usage is around 3.5-4GB (I have 6GB RAM). I don't think I can overclock the CPU with the Intel board, I don't think they allow that with this board. I just wish I could rule out that there is something wrong with the graphics card, however I cannot. It's really hard to troubleshoot this one.

If the frame rates are staying the same as you lower the resolution, that's a CPU bottleneck.

Thank you.

That was my though on it too. I guess I'll need to look at upgrading my CPU/mobo/RAM at some point in the near future.

That's my thought exactly. The entire system is too old to support that card, especially the mobo
