Not sure if this should be in the PSU or video card section, so bear with me.
Would it be madness to try and run a GTX460 and GTS250(PPU) off a Antec Neo HE500?

Q9400@3.8ghz, Single optical and hard drive in the system.

The 460 itself recommends minimum 450w psu to power entire system. From what I red on nvidias site the 460 can draw max 160w, and the 250 can draw up to 150w. I think it would work as long as both cards aren't under full load at same time. Im not sue as to what kind of load is put on a dedicated physics card though.
 
Yeah, I wasn't sure what the load on the GTS250 in PPU mode would be like. Also, when you start looking at amperage across multiple rails, my eyes start to cross. :D
 
Are you the type of person that runs Furmark+Prime95+HDtach at the same time for no obvious reason? If you aren't, then it will work. If you plan on adding anything else to the rig, I'd look into getting another PSU. But in the mean time, should be ok.

I'm not sure the type of workload dedicated physics cards are under, but I'd imagine in a hardware physics game, the card would be at 100% or close to it. Any other game...it's sitting pretty much idle.
 
Depends which GTX460. That's pushing it, but it should work, depending on how good the unit is.
My Q9550 @ 3.7Ghz with 1.35V [a bit more power than your Q8400 since that's an 80W chip versus the 95W of the Q9550, though the TDP doesn't show it] drew 390W out of the unit [455W ac] with an HD4870X2 and 3 drives.
The 4870X2 is 286W rated, and a GTX460+GTS250 is about 300W, about 320W for the GTX460 1GB+GTS250, so in your system, with 3 drives, you're probably looking at 420W DC at the most, depending on what your CPU voltage is, maybe less. The unit will be under heavy stress, but it should cope.
 
That will work fine. I am running a GTX 460, 9500gt, Q8200 and two hard drives on my CX400 PSU. The 9500gt is rated to draw 50w, ~100 less then your card, and you have a 100 more watts on your psu. perfect, also note the ppu will use less power compared to a rendering card.
 
FWIW I am drawing right at 400w, running 2 GTX 460's, one hard drive, Q9550. Cards are overclocked to max for the cards. CPU is stock settings. Everything is loaded to 100% usage using Folding.

For what its worth...
 
Yeah the stock CPU will be helping there. If it were overclocked you'd be looking around more like 430-440W at least I'd think.
