GPU Performance Trends - Or buying GPUs now for future PPD

So the obvious sweet spot right now for GPU folding is on the Nvidia side using G92 based GPUs. There have been some allusions in other threads about how the PPD for G92 based GPUs will drop as newer more complex proteins are released.

With that thought in mind. What are the relative merits of the following options:

1. Go ATI, 4850 or 4870 series GPUs.
2. Go Nvidia 260 or 280
3. Go G92 and take the PPD hit at some point down the road. I see the big advantage to this option as 9600GSOs can still be found some places less than $60.
4. Go big on the G92 Route and buy 9800X2s?
 
There's no telling what the future holds. Diversify your portfolio and you'll be good which ever way the wind is blowing.

ATI cards have a lot of slow shaders, so bigger work-units fill more of them so they crunch better. The small test work-unit sucked on them.
nVidia cards have a smaller number of quick shaders, so bigger work-unit overflow them so they crunch slower. The small test work-unit rocks on them.
Hence the major PpD difference between the cards.
When bigger work-units are coming out is anybodies guess, but expect screams of pain from many nVidia owner who dont understand the situation.

It works for both actually. :D

Putting all your eggs into one basket is always risky as we saw way back with the QMD core, and then again with the GPU1 client.
 
As of right now none of my clients run on dedicated boxes so my opinion is limited. I bought what I wanted/needed so for now I am happy. Like people have said though, diversity is a great way to make sure you don't get jobbed over.

Don't forget bonds. :p

2/3 of my paycheck last month came from selling bonds:p

I have started to look at the 4850X2 card(s) for my main rig. They need to come out first and have a price point.

I just upgraded 2 week ago....... There might be some goodies in The FS thread in a few weeks.
