GPU frequency - does it really matter?

For small overclocks like that, there is no benefit to buying the expensive card.
Your own overclock can achieve the same result.

While that may be true, the BFG OC'd card has been tested to hit those clocks. If you buy the lower clocked card you are not guaranteed to hit those clocks, just FYI :)

also note one rule.. if your GPU can't handle a game at its stock speed, it won't handle it at an overclocked speed. you are looking at a couple FPS difference, if that when overclocked vs not overclocked

go BFG if you not [H]ard enough to overclock yourself, there is something to be said for OC with warranty as opposed to voiding it on a standard card.

That is true, technically speaking overclocking the card voids the warranty if it causes physical damage to the card, but we know you guys do it anyways and I've been trying to be as helpful as possible in these situations ;)

For BFG GTX 275 I see one card for sale has a GPU GT200b running at 648MHz and
another BFG GTX 275 GPU model running at 709MHz. If I OC the 648MHz model to
709MHz will it run the same as buying the 709MHz model or is there some benefit
to buying a card with the GPU already OCed?

well to start with no OC you do yourself is certain, my BFG GTX280 will not OC for crap, (not unhappy that just the luck of the draw) and that is a ~9% jump so it will make a difference in some games. Odds are that you can get that kind of an OC without spending the money but its still a chance. The other benefit is that the OC card is done in the bios so it doesn't rely on software.

for myself its more fun to try and OC it yourself though :D

I have a BFG GTX 275 OC and it does 713/1512/1260 without a hitch everyday use, fan on auto too! Max on auto fan is 720/1584/1296
