I just saw that the 6950 will not allow for powerstrip? Does that mean I can't use 85-120hz refresh with my crt? I use it for FPS.
 
You can force the refresh rate with CCC. I'm doing that with my CRT, works fine.
 
why wouldnt you upgrade to a superior lcd instead of using an inefficient non-widescreen lcd/led? You can get great ones for less than $150 some even around $100 depending on how big you need. If you are willing to drop the better part of $300 on a gpu that is not required due to very low native resolution, you could get the same results with a much cheaper card.
 
Can't deal with 60hz limitation. Tried it and no. I need the speed of the crt and can't afford a 120hz lcd. Until they get the price down.... Anyway, I guess it would be an Nvidia gpu? I play the BF series mostly.

I see that you can force the HZ in CCC for ATI thanks. Did not know that.

Resolution is 2048x1536. Not exactly low.
 
Tried it and no what? Just go buy a descent 60hz lcd and throw the big clunker in the trash. I played the BF series for several years at 60hz on my lcd and it was fine.
 
FW900 running 1920x1200@96Hz via 6950 ftw! BNC connection required some effort to get working, but VGA was very easy.

Cowboy420 - He means he can't stand the FPS cap of 60 due to the 60Hz refresh rate of almost every LCD.
 
Yeah trust me it makes a big huge difference. My kdr and total effectiveness is MUCH higher with the crt. Would I prefer a larger screen? Sure. Just can't afford one that can do what this old clunker does.

Anyway, that is not the point. I am leaning towards the 6950 2gb but am hesitant b/c of the weird issues ati seems to have with the frostbite engine is all. I wish the 570 would be updated with at least 2gb. Not likely but yeah.
 
Once you use a 120MHz LCD monitor, you can never go back to 60MHz. It is really painful on the eyes. Plus games just look so much better. a 120Mhz CRT monitor is also very good. A friend still uses a huge sony monitor that looks really nice. Just not a wide screen...

If the 2gb 560 was cheaper I might bite. Currently, I would rather get the 570 around the same price.

Pricing atm is just plain wtf. The only one that seems reasonable is maybe the 6950 at $250. I mean a 460 at $250!!!!!? huh? Makes NO sense that so many slower cards are MORE than faster cards. Rebates are bs. Generally, shopping for a gpu is pretty damn confusing atm. Perhaps the most mixed up ever.

Just silly that so many cards are piled up b/w the $200-300 range that are both old and new gen. Rebates for the old gen? Just cut the price already.

120Hz monitors aren't all that expensive. I'd more inclined to go for the 120Hz LCD FIRST, THEN upgrade my GPU a little later. What GPU are you using to run your G500 now?
 
Whats the rest of your system specs? It may not even be worth it to upgrade that 4850.
 
I just got that 5850 for $130 here. That will tide me over until the card prices come back to reality a bit.

Rest of the sys is fast enough. 3.6 ghz 9450 quad, 4 gigs, vista 64 ( might be part of the issue too )
 
$130 for a 5850 is a good deal. I dont know why you would think its a slouch card that will "tide you over"

Its really not that much slower than the 6950.

Link is broken. Anyway, until BF3 or another similiar multi fps comes along, I will save up for upgrades to everything. In the meantime, I am hoping nvidia releases something like a 2gb 580 around the $350 range. I really think nvidia runs the BF series a bit smoother with less drops in fps.

Happy with a 5850 for now though. Especially for a reasonable price. Still think the prices need to be tiered properly. Paying more for older slower tech that the new is just silly.

What would be really sweet is if both companies developed a specialized FPS bundle. Including a fast lcd and offering 3 levels of various size monitors and gpus would be a good idea.
