I keep getting PM's with questions on which GPU is the best bang for the buck, and I see the question rises on the forums often among new and old folders. Thus I thought to make a quick overview since there is some confusion among all the nVidia cores / series-names etc.

The 8800GS / 9600GSO looks really good from a PpD / $ point of view, but considering the cost of the rest of the system, the 8800GT with it's 112 shaders over 8800GS 96 shaders will give you a better PpD / $ total cost.

*1: 9800GT can be delivered with either 65nm or 55nm core. Thanks Xilikon!

Edit: Fixed an error in my notes on the G80 cards.

8800GTX G80 Core 620/1700/2100 = 5500PPD, I have two at that speed and both are water cooled. I would say the 162W is about right as I'm at above Ulta speeds.

I also can tell you at stock the 8800GT #'s are off... no way someone is getting nearly 5k on a stock GT... in fact depending on your version fo the 88GT it can dip down to 3.5k - 4.5k and if you OC the shaders can hit a peak of about 5200PPD.

Also note that your "Clock" is not cpu its shaders...

The 8800GTS is pretty much spot on for a stock card. If you oc the shaders mine went unstable at 2000 after about 3 hrs.. so I backed it down to 1950. With that OC you hit above 6k. :)

Just a couple of points from someone that has some experience with them :)

All 4 of my straight-out-of-the-box clocked 8800GTs do about 4800PPD (varies from ~4650 to 4950 depending on WU) 3x Gigabytes and 1x XFX.

I never bothered to OC them I was happy with their stock production.

Damn, you got the 8800 Ultra+ to do 5500?? Hmm.. A friend of mine did some testing on his 8800 GTX stock and barely got above 4000 with a little OC. Also some of the PpD numbers are picked up off of reports on FAH forum.

My stock 8800GT runs in my mediacenter at 4880 PpD right now, never seen it go below 4500.. Maybe I've got a OC'd card? Bah, will have to dive in and check it out. ;)

Edit: Nope, no OC. Stock card.

Yep, same as I'm getting.

It depends what the 8800GTs are clocked at.

I've had 450/1500/750 from Stock
to 700/1700/900 stock and neither were SOC or OC2 versions... it really depends how they come from the vendor...

Abviously the first card is the one I was talking about. It is strugl'n at 3.5k currently. I need to figure out how to make a dos bootable usb drive desperately! So I can put a perma OC on that card!

Tedkj that was from a water cooled 8800GTX... stock is 575/1350/900 I moved it to 620/1700/1050, but again water cooled... never ever sees above 50-55c under load.

1- Make sure the numbers come from a setup with 177.35 driver. If you run 174.55, the numbers is obviously lower than that.
2- while the 9800GT is a obvious rebrand, it's not a guaranteed 55nm version so the power usage might be a bit off if you got a card with a old core. I will receive my 9800GT today and I'll check tonight if I got a 55nm card or not.
3- You forgot the GTX 260 ;) At stock speed, it's about 6000 ppd and by overclocking to 1512 shaders, I can get between 6500 and 7500 ppd depending on which workunit.
4- You also forgot the 9800GTX and 9800GTX+ ;)

My watercooled 8800GTS 640MB with 1700 MHz shaders do about 4500 ppd. Stock, it's about 3600 PPD IIRC.
