GPU folding speed is dependent upon CPU speed

I just got my E6300 clocked to 3.0 ghz and I can tell for sure that it does affect GPU folding.

E6300 @ 1.86: 8mins 45s per frame
E6300 @ 3.03 7mins 53s per frame

This is all on an X1950Pro @ default clock speed

I also noticed that GPU folding seems to be limited somewhat by processor speed. I have an 2Ghz AMD Venice and a 1900XT. Temps usually stay solid at 72-74 (I have the MSI IceQ3 heatpipe cooler on the card) when I am not using the computer. However, even basic web browsing causes GPU temps to drop to 63-68. While I haven’t closely monitored frame times, I would imagine that a temp drop that significant would indicate significantly less load on the GPU.

Temps quickly return to 72-74 when I stop using the computer.

Seems odd 2 other people are getting same times (8:00 +/-) with totally different CPU setups.

I was planning on putting my soon to be arriving X1900XTX (used) on a mobo that is running an X2 3800 @ 2.45ghz. I was under the impression that I'd lose too much production putting it on my C2D system (running 2 cores at 3.2ghz)...but having some firm info either way would be very useful. I don't want to handicap myself production by using up a faster C2D core if I don't have to...

use the X2 3800 .......will do just fine...2 units per day 660 points

I figured the X2 would be the better option. Though my C2D hasn't been as productive as I'd hoped it would be (lots of Amber units lately).
