GPU folding issue or just plain GPU cooling issue?

I decided to try GPU folding with this EVGA GTX 480 superclock I'm using while my 7970 is out for RMA.

Temps hit 97 degrees celcius 5-10 minutes after starting up GPUFAH before I shut it off. It kept climbing relatively slowly from 95 and I'm concerned maybe there is an issue I need to address with the heatsink but because I recently completely reset the heatsink with AS5 and haven't had an issue with heat before this I'm thinking it may be an issue with with FAH.

I have played games like skyrim and bf3 for hours without ever having an issue with temps going over 85. I have 3x80mm fans and a ~200mm fan in my case as well as exhaust fans and etc. Suffice it to say, cooling has never been much of an issue in this computer case.

I'm wondering what temps other people are getting with this card and if there's a way to control the % load on the GPU?

Edit: Also, these temps were taken with gpu-z and they were the temps from the graphics driver, while the temps given by the sensor chip seem to be about 6 degrees C less at any given time.

Yeah, mine stops at 94%.

I know in furmark the temp will jump up to 95+ and then come back down. I haven't folded since I was on an AMD rig, and that was atleast 6 years ago now.

try using afterburner and crank the fan to full before you start and see what happens. 480s are hot runners, but if they stay under 100 typically it doesn't matter.

I decided to let it run for a long while to see if this card is truly stable even while gpu folding.

So far I had one of my two monitors plugged in and it has been bouncing from 98 to 99 degrees celcius and back to 98. It seems like it's stable with one monitor plugged in but now that I plugged in my second monitor we'll see... Usually plugging in a second monitor bumps my temps up 10 degrees celcius.

How is your case temp when its running? Is there a noticeable rise for the rest of the hardware?

GTX480's are little bake ovens, and less than ideal for folding, but if its running okay, I wouldn't worry about it. Enjoy your nice warm room.

Just to get some more info for you, I DLed the F2H client. My card seems to hover at about 92c. This is with 74f ambient. I also have a High flow bracket, so your temps are likely abit higher. I would try lowering your voltage in afetrburner. That will quickly help your temps.

This is the version of gtx 480 I have, it's got the high flow bracket as well. I don't buy cards without the back exhaust. I love back exhaust.

As for ambient temp I don't have anything to check that at the moment.

It looks like the card's fan won't hit 100% according to any of the fan programs I have. I manually set it to 100% and it still won't hit 100%, it stays at 92%. Maybe this is a contributing issue?

Don't worry about it, honestly, it's fine.

I really don't think it is. Not when it gets to 100 degrees and just keeps climbing pretty slowly. So, when it hits 105 or 110, will it still be ok then? Extrapolate the temp to its logical end and you'll realize there's a pretty serious issue.

Clean out the heatsink real well, and make sure you have good case ventilation. If you've done all that then take the heatsink off and reapply TIM. 100c is OK, but 110c is probably indeed pushing it. It should level off at ~95c or so anyways, but they can take a lot of heat.

Okay, I should also point out I'm at 800mhz. So I should indeed be hotter then you. Like Extide said, clean that thing til it sparkles and try to reseat/reapply tim. I used a peasized dot in the middle and then just used the clamping pressure to spread it. I had worse temps when I tried to spread the tim. I am using AS5 though, so thats similar between us.
