So, it sounds like the cooler on my X1950pro AGP card is about to eat itself.... I had to shut the client down in fear of killing my card...

Anyone have any experience with a good aftermarket fan for this card?
 
I have an arctic cooling gpu cooler on my X1900GT and it works like a charm, the things silent and cools really well.
 
Thanks for the advice... I'll take a look at a few and see what I can come up with...... ad quiet is good, the stock fan on this card was loud to begin with, but it sounds a bit like a chainsaw now:(

Need to do something pretty quick, I hate having the card not folding.....

 
i just threw an arctic cooling HSF on my quad, so I can vouch for the quality of their coolers :)

 
I use the Thermalright HR-03A on my X1950XTX's.
Keeps the temps down and very quite with a 92mm fan.
Only downs sides are in dumps the heat in the case and it takes up around 3 slots width.

That might work! Space is not an issue in this machine, my X1950pro is the only card on the board... and it's in an old full tower server case so there is plenty of ventilation... Thanks for the tips guys...

Interesting. I could probably rig a duct to vent the air out of the case, or reverse the airflow to blow in. Have you managed to OC higher with the Thermalright HR-03A? I have a X1950 Pro AGP card and I can't seem to break beyond the ~630PPD mark. I can't figure out why and I am running the GPU@662MHz... Any ideas? Do the AGP cards come with slower GPUs and/or memory chips?

I cannot afford the power to run the card at 3d speeds.
Mine are the X1950xtx PCI-E cards and I know I had them clocked so I was getting 5:59-6:01 per frame or a few mins over 10 hours per work unit.
Consistant 770 PpD.
I think it was close to 666 Mhz core @1.375v and 1200 Mhz memory.

How does one know for certain if their card is running at 3D speeds?

In ATITool my memory speed is reporting 769.5MHz and the slider is nearly all the way down. :confused:
If I wish to increase the memory frequency even incrementally, I lose the display. :confused:

I think that why I have a lot faster memory speed.
Bog standard 3d speeds are 650 Mhz @1.425v for the core & 1,000 Mhz for the memory.
The down side is that it uses an extra 80 watts to run at that speed.

The GGDR3 memory on my card would also explain the big discrepancy in performance given everything but the bus architecture is the same. I guess there is a difference between the AGP and the top PCI-E versions in configuration. Well, at least I purchased the 512MB version and can't complain about the price I paid at the time...

BTW, how did you accomplish the voltage increase? My card @662MHz is running only 55 degrees. I believe I have the thermal headroom for greater than 670MHz if I can get higher voltages and possibly a better cooler like the TR HR-03A you mentioned earlier.
 
I actualy ran my card under-volted.
It was stable and cooler running at 1.375v instead of 1.425v which is the 3d voltage.
I did all my vid card overclocking useing the latest ATI tool beta and not the catalyst control center.

On a side note, I don’t care if you paid $29.95 or $999.99 for a video card, what’s up with the crap fans and heat sinks?

I can live with the stockers supplied by the CPU manufactures, we all know we are going to push the limits and it’s a given we will buy a replacement to suit our needs.

Video cards on the other hand almost always eat their own fans, never provide enough cooling, run way too hot and heat our cases while at the same time they pay for fancy shrouds and squirrel cage blowers that are ineffective as well as too damn noisy.

Ahhh, I feel better now. Nothing like a mini rant especially when it’s true;):D


 
I agree... and I really, really thought that the fan on this card would last. I shopped, and looked and compared, and the heat sink/fan on this card really impressed me.....

Until now.....
