The best price I can seem to find for the 6870 is $162 minus a $20 MIR:

Newegg tax kills me so something a bit cheaper there isn't really a deal for me.

I'm kind of pressed on cash, but I really need to upgrade my graphics card to match the rest of my PC (I've got a 4850 with an i7-2600k, 8GB RAM, etc.). I can live with it right now, but I want to have a decent rig by the time Skyrim comes out.

I know the new line of GPUs are on the horizon, but it doesn't seem like they're exactly expected to come out this year... I've been waiting a while on the chance that GPU prices would drop (read some rumor that 6850s would drop to the $100 range). Well, it doesn't look that that's going to happen, at least not in time for Skyrim. And who knows if prices might even go up for the holidays...

I really want to spend under $150 (before rebates) on a video card, but the 6870 looks like the best price for the performance... Bleh, I guess I just want someone to tell me to buy the thing; it's sitting in my cart. lol.

Skyrim is not coming out for another 2 months. If the upgrade is solely focused on that I'd wait and watch for deals in the mean time.

Agreed, if Skyrim is the only game you're worried about, may as well leave it until then.
