GPU client slows CPU client 10x

Hi everyone, I'm new here, I've been reading the DC forms for awhile and have dabbled in folding in the past but haven't really made a habit of it because my computer was always in the room that I sleep in, and honestly, this thing is loud lol. Since moving I finally have a second room to put it in so I wanted to see if I could get my computer up and running with folding and if it didn't prove to be terribly difficult I'd try and keep it up (and my PS3!).

That said, as the title of the thread says, it appears as though when I turn on my GPU client for my ATI 4870 (512mb) that the SMP client for my Q6600 TANKS in PPD. It was doing one update of 5000 steps every 6 minutes for a PPD of ~6k prior to turning on the GPU client, but since that it's doing the 5k update in ~45 minutes, which is somewhere between 300 and 600PPD as reported by HFM.NET.

I did notice that in the task manager the GPU client (FahCore_11.exe) is using ~20% of my CPU load with the CPU client (FahCore_a3.exe) taking the rest minus whatever I'm doing on the computer for about 65%-75%. In addition to that, in the CCC the load on the GPU is only at 86%.

Is this behavior normal? It is my assumption that it is NOT normal, or else why would anyone fold with their GPUs if only to tank the CPU output. If you have any advice I would greatly appreciate it!

My computer is in my sig if you curious on the details!
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Just run F@H with SMP client.

F@H does not like ATI cards at all.

That said there are plenty other DC projects that do very well on ATI cards.

It is normal for ATI GPUs. They do not fold well at all and kill your CPU output. You are probably better off not running it at all.

yes the ATI folding client is a complete piece of junk.. so it requires a single core just for the client.. there is a way to fix it so it doesnt but honestly save your power bill and just turn the gpu client off.. ATI cards dont make enough points to warrant going through the hassle of getting it working right.. hopefully one day PG releases the gpu3 openCL client for ATI cards.. should fix the cpu usage and actually allow the card to compete with nvidia cards..

Unfortunately the ATI/GPU clients are not on par with performance with nvidia GPU clients (massive understatement).

You will be better off giving your Q6600 CPU SMP client a higher priority than the ATI GPU client.

It's all good for science. But this is one area (maybe the only) where the ATI GPU falls short.

I run a GTX285 GPU client with a C2D E8400 @ 3.46 GHz and they don't interfere with each other (about 13k PpD combined).

Thanks for all the quick replies!

I did read that the ATI cards didnt play well with the F@H client, but I figured it was just an output thing for the card, not that it messed with the CPU output!

GPU client off now, I did let it finish the one WU though lol. Hopefully I can get back up into that 6k PPD area and get some stuff done.

A second question for you guys who run F@H on your main computers, do you just let it run when you play games or do whatever else? I was going to give it a try playing BC2 tonight with it running, but the GPU problem (and MotoGP DVR recordings ;D) got in the way lol. I wouldn't have a problem turning down settings in the game as long as it remained playable. Just curious as to your experiences!

Thank you again! :D I've got a new computer build starting to burn a hole in my pocket, I may have caught the DC bug a lil bit lol.

I shutdown my nvidia/GPU client when I play games (guilt sets in but hey it's my gaming rig after all ...) because it lags the FPS.

The SMP client throttles back nicely so I let that continue while playing games.

Mileage may vary

PS It's a good bug to have :)

yeah you can leave it running in the background.. only game ive ever seen it have a problem with was crysis but thats because the engines cpu clock dependent for some reason.. just make sure the fahcore_A3.exe is running in idle process mode and you should be good to go.. if you have any problems you can just go into task manager..right click the fahcore_a3.exe and go to the affinity and uncheck 2 of the cores while you play..
