ok I tried searching but didnt come up with any good answer... perhaps my search ninja failed me...

anyhow... how much CPU time does the GPU client use?

I am trying to figure out some high ppd/machine setups and am looking at mobos with lots of PCIe x16 slots, would a core2duo be able to feed 4x nvidia cards?
 
I have found that this completely depends on the WU they are working on. That being said I don't think a c2d would have any issues running 4 nvidia cards. If you plan on running a cpu client though then you can expect a nice increase in TPF.


Does this mean you're coming back to the fight?
 
A NV card will pull around 5% or less.

I ran 6 GPUs/Clients (3x 9800GX2s) in a single box with a E2140 and it had no problem at all.

ATI cards are a different matter. Don't build a farm out of them. It just isn't worth it. If you have one to game with and happen to fold on it great. But a $50 NV card will out fold a $200 ATI card.
 
The nVidia GPU client does not use much CPU power. The only thing you would have to worry about is the clients reducing the PPD from the SMP client if you're running it on the same machine.
 
ya they are all going to be nvidia cards... im going to leave my big cpu hitters by themselves... and build some machines with lower end c2d chips i have laying around (E4400's etc) on 4x PCI-E boards to run 4 cards so im not worried about their CPU performance at all... i might actually have those running BOINC on the CPU's

thinking of picking up one or two MSI P6N Diamond's... has 4x PCIe x16 slots (8x 8x 8x 16x) figure since I am running the machines naked that board should accept 4x dual slot cards with the last one hanging off the end...

figure 4x GPU's per board should net some decent PPD...

any other tricks or pitfalls I should be aware of? its been a while since I have worked with GPU Clients...
 
Less problems with similar/same cards.

You can get mixed batches to work... I say don't tempt fate when you running that many clients and trying to keep them playing nice.
 
the nvidia client on avg ive seen is between 0-5% but the odd thing is that even when the client claims its using 0% of the cpu if the cpu's under full load it still effects the PPD of the gpu client.. so my thought is that its not correctly showing how much of the processor its actually using.. easy way of fixing that is just putting the gpu at below normal priority or in the options of the client check slightly higher in the advanced tab..
 
which nvidia cards are you looking at? there are some tricks in play if you want to use the dual gpu cards like 9800gx2 or gtx295
