GpU better than quad cpu?

In my mind, it's kinda odd that a q9550 @ 2.83 + 4gigs of ram using smp client, using all 4 cores, is being far outpaced by my 8800gt @ 650mhz with 512 ram.


Gpu 5-7000 ppd
Cpu 1500-2500 ppd

Vista Ultimate x64. Current NV drivers. Set to "big" and -verbosity 9 on both. -smp on the cpu client. Other than that, it's default settings. Does this seem correct?
 
well your 8800gt has 112 stream processors, so that is like 112 to 4

its nothing strange, cpus are crap if u compare any decent gfx card to this kind of simulations.
 
It's not a strait 4-112 comparison, but even if each of the stream proc does less work than a core in the CPU (and this is the case) there are just so many of them.
 
A Q9550 can reach up to 5k PPD with the LinSMP client. However, GPUs are generally more efficient at folding due to the way that their design is suited to these sorts of calculations, whereas CPUs are more general-purpose processors.
 
The main reason why the nVidia GPU client gives such a better PpD than the SMP client is how Stanford benchmarks the GPU protiens.
The GPU protiens are all benchmarks at 1,500 PpD on an ATI 3850.

Now ATI cards have a large number of slowish shaders but nVidia cards have a smaller number of quick shaders.
As long as the protiens small enough to fit into the shaders, the nVidia cards will rip through the protiens so much faster than an ATI card.
Hence the big PpD bonus.
And the screams of pain as bigger protiens get released into the Wild and the nVidia PpD drops.
