Since my son likes keeping his computer on 24/7 I thought I might as well have it fold. The box has an Athlon II x 240 processor so I think I'll just have it GPU fold. Currently it has a GTS 250 with a dying fan so I want to get something in there with a little bit more firepower. Any advise on a mid-range priced GPU with some decent ppd?

I'd go with a GTX460, can get a 192bit version for a nice price at the egg. Will do over 10K ppd and not use too much juice.

I got a 460 GTX running on one of my rigs. It makes about 9K PPD, but it is also running on linux going through wine and the cuda wrapper. On a windows only system, it makes about 11K PPD.

gtx 460 is probably the best option all around. good gaming performance, decent power usage and good PPD output.

another option if hes running a lower res is maybe the GTS 450.

The 460 is a much better gaming card than the 450.

Could also look at a 560ti if you can score one for cheap. 460's are now out of production and becoming harder to find

How abount some uni proc action on the cpu as well?

My son is not into any high resolution gaming, so something like the 450 GTS sounds pretty good. Maybe a little uniprocessor action as well. This computer will be registered to him instead of me. Maybe I'll get him hooked. :D

GTX460@10-12K PPD average is kinda the way to go.
GTS450@8.5-9.5K PPD average, still not bad, and kinda cheaper if I recall.

Dear god, I need to start up my video card guides again for PPD and numbers and all.

I'm not being to ambitious here, just doing enough to lure him down the rabbit hole called FAH. Giving him a username and a link to his EOC stats ought to do the trick. :D

you are a pusher of a strange addiction.

there are laws against this in seven states.

I might be in the market to sell a few GTX 460's soon.. 768mb variety...

+1 to the 768M GTX460, I run six of them currently. The 450 can choke on some of the larger WUs, whereas the 460 is the current Stanford benchmark GPU, so it is "safe".
