hi i just upgraded my file server from vista x64 (it was gaming/server machine) to Window 2008 standard edition, installing went fine then get in to win2008 everythink look great, download and install all window updates and such.

then i look up in computer management and saw that mine old storage drive on my raid card is not initialize so i click on it and make it GPT since it is 20TB drive. it gave me and error says "this system could not find the file specific" i check my another drive (vista boot) which is 600 GB on the same raid card it is show up and accessible

after that i went back to vista boot to check if my raid was collapse... but my 20TB drive still there

so the question is how can i make it work with out backing everything up and re-setup the raid?

thanks

Did you install the correct drivers for the card on the 2k8 installation?

i did as on that adaptec card has 24 ports 22 port go to RAID 6 and 2 port go to RAID 0 (600 GB)

in w2k8 i see the RAID 0 drive but on the 20 TB i can't see in my computer when i check in computer management it said the big drive is not initialize, then i right click on it to initialize it say "this system could not find the file specific"

is it because i'm switching from x64 vista to x86 w2k8??

do i have to have extra driver for GPT drive?

still i have no idea why ><

When you setup your raid 6 what did you use for the option of over 2TB volume support? Maybe windows can't see it becuase you didnt' setup that part? My raid cards have the options of using 64bit LBA, 4k blocks etc for this purpose.

well i can't remember it was long time ago when i set it up but i can see it on vista boot but not on win2k8 boot

any idea?

well Vista and Win2k8 are based on the same codebase from what I've read so you'd think they would work the same.

You should be able to see the raidset information by logging into the raid's bios before bootup and look at its info.

When you did the install did it show the large raid array in the available disks? When you install win2k8 it won't let you install it on a GPT drive but it still should show the array in the drive list. Do you remember what that screen looked like?

I assume you have the Adaptec 51245 card?
Which driver are you using, the storport or the scsiport driver?

Through some experimentation, I found out that with the storport
driver, raidsets using disks of unequal sizes is OK, whereas with
the scsiport driver, it causes the array to show up as "unreadable"
in the disk management of Windows.

Are all 22 of the disks in the RAID6 of exactly equal size?
I had problems because 2 of 8 disks in my raid were
refurbished drives, and they had slightly different amount of sectors
than the non-refurbished drives, even though they were all
7200.10 500gb models. This slight size difference caused problems.

Right-click "status" on the individual drives and
check "Capacity" and make sure all the numbers match up...

you are exactly right i have 1 drive has less 1MB (was refurb) i'm using adaptec 52445

but how come i was readable in vista x64??

if i back everything up will setting up new array will solve this problem? but it take a lot of time and make mine data on a risk ><

My guess is that your Vista install was using the STORPORT driver
(Adaptec calls it the AACRAID driver) whereas your 2008 install
is using the SCSIPORT driver.

If your 2008 install is using SCSIPORT, try switching to the STORPORT driver,
and your array may show up normally.

You can get the drivers from the Adaptec website.
