I'm looking to purchase a GPS device for around $600 or less. I was looking at the TomTom 910 and I found to be a good model except for two cons, the maps are usually outdated and the mounting bracket brakes rather easily. Is there anything out there that you guys would recommend?

Well, TomTom recently released new map updates so that should clear up any map issues that you have and they have made new mounts, they are much more sturdy than before. I have used friend's TomTom's before and i have to say, I really liked them. I would invest in 910 if i were you. Hope that helps.

Do I have to pay for those maps, how up-to-date are they?

I've been shopping around for GPS systems as well. I'm kind of leaning toward the Nuvi 660 myself but the tomtom 910 is still a contender for my money. Any first hand information on either of these would be great.

I have used the 910 before and i really like it. They are super easy to use and i love the recalculation feature if you make a wrong turn. I would go with the 910. Hope that helps.

I've been using a used IBM Thinkpad laptop for $275 on eBay and a $80 DeLorme GPS receiver and software. Much larger screen! Easier typing in addresses to search for. Doesn't fit in your pocket -but fits on the passenger seat just dandy!
