I need someone who knows more about electricity to verify this. But wouldn't you be pulling half the amount of power with your computer power supply if you switched it to 220 instead of 110. I'm asking this because if that is so, you would literally cut your power bill for your farm in half by switching it to 220. My friend said something about this tonight, and if it's true, I'm switching over.
 
For this to work, you need to wire the outlet for 220 volts and 99% of N/A homes is wired for 115v. Doing that will damage your power supply.

 
Why would it damage your power supply. As far as I know, most power supplies are wired for 110 to 230 volts, at least according to the documentation with mine it is. I'm aware that the current outlet is 110. I would run new wire for a 220 outlet JUST for my PC. It's not hard, I've done it before.
 
If you could get the infrastructure in place you'll only see a few % gain in power efficiency, not 50%. An 80% efficient PSU running at 220VAC will be about 83-85% efficient. Still worth doing IMO, as it adds up over time.

 
I'm no power expert, but power is power is power. Power = Voltage x Current, rule of physics. So if you need 2200 watts for your farm, you pull 2200 watts off the electrical grid. Whether that 2200 watts is pulled in as 220V x 10 amps or 110V x 20 amps makes no difference to the electric company, you're still using 2200 watts.:eek:

Agree with rmdashrrootsplat, though - you may see a little gain because the PSU is more efficient at higher voltage, but definitely not 50%.
 
The reason many psu offer a 115v or 230v selector is because some markets have different requirements. If you wire it for 220v then it's not a problem ;)

 
I don't think that it would work because countries running 220V typically run at 50Hz while here we run at 60Hz.

Besides that, at 110V or 220V the current draw would be the same. Power = Current x Voltage. So if you up the voltage, you would be upping the Power.
 
Don't let them discourage you Boomy, the data center I work in has both 110 and 220. We can run any of our systems on 220 and most on 110. If we run the smaller systems like the DL360's and DL380's on 220 we gain efficiency over running them on 110.

Now, you're not going to save a whole lot but your idea is sound. Only on much larger scale would it really make sense.

I've been working around the electrical industry for 17 years and what he says is the truth. the only benefit you will see is the slight increase in power supply efficientcy. it's small but it will add up.

And then again, different PSU designs have peak efficiencies at different load levels. So hypothetically it would work, but I daresay the difference would be negligible.
 
I think they are right, not about the fire, but of the fact that the difference would be small. That's what I tried to tell him. I was like I think that they measure the kWh so it doesn't matter if it's 220v @ 6 amps or 110v @ 12 amps it's the SAME kWh usage. The efficiency does go up a few percent but it's almost not worth it unless you have a crapload of boxen. I do have my computer, my moms, and my linux box, but I don't see it making a huge difference between just those. The rest of my production isn't from my house, so who cares how much power it pulls :)
 
A better way to get more efficient with 220v is to get a beefy 220v UPS wired directly to the panel then your farm plugged to it. This is often what datacenters do.
