Gothic 4 delayed

Okay, I bought this. Got my serial key and everything. Download will take about 14 hours.

Screw that. Why is it taking that long?

Now I'm leaving home again, this time with my PC on. This always worries me a bit. Sometimes I'll even phone home, just to see if my answering machine kicks in - if it doesn't, then I'll know that my home burned down. :(

That one guy in that Steam thread from Canada said he bought it but it wouldn't fire up at all.

I posted the old "48Khz max audio" advice for him since that's what happened to me on the demo. The demo wouldn't even start or anything until I did that.

lol, Wabe, where do you fit in Myer's Briggs personality profile?

The guy never finishes a game. Ever. ;)

Wabe: Is there a game you don't buy? :p I can't believe you really couldn't wait a few more days for this. ;)

i really want this game lol. the delay sucks, because it pushes it into other titles that I also wanted to play

Fable 3
Fallout New Vegas
COD BO

Looks like reviews from euro sites/IGN are averaging 7 - 8 out of 10. Seems pretty standard for a Gothic game. I'm hoping for a mod right out of the gate to add consequences to stealing. As it stands, you can steal anything you like in broad daylight. Killable NPC's would be a good start too.

You mean the game does not support executions like previous gothics? Or is the default armor so high they don't take damage - like the first two gothics?

You cannot kill friendly NPC's, at all. Sad, but...it will be modded.

Not bad at all!

Agreed. Hope the mod community has a quick field day when they get their hands on this.

I'm normally patient. It's just that if I can spend a week on Gothic 4, and then transition into New Vegas next week, that would be ideal. Both these title I likely will finish. New Vegas, in particular, is a title I'll likely complete.... something would have to be horribly wrong with NV for me not to finish it.

My download is tasking that long, 14 hours, because that's my normal speed. DSL light. 160kbs is my max. Nobody on this forum seems to have a poorer Internet connection than mine... which is why I never bought into the quite frankly silly argument that almost everyone was advancing about the UBI Soft drm, and how they wouldn't be able to connect. Bollocks. On my god awful Internet setup I wasn't disconnected once in 40 hours of play.... not for one second.

its not BS. It only means you were lucky while playing. I did AC2 and for the most part there were not any issues. Two days though, my internet was up and down. Not a problem? Well it is, when you were running holding *SPACE*, and then the entire game completely disappears. I realized that when the internet drops it goes to the wait screen, where you can wait for internet to come back up, or press *SPACE* to exit. Running + internet drops = game disappears.

You could have a direct fiber optic line to Ubisoft's routers, if their servers are suffering, you will lose connection.

It has nothing to do with your Internet, but their servers. My internet is "better" than yours and I told you about the two times it happened to me. I know it had nothing to do with anything on my end so I wish you'd stop banging that talking point because it's just irrelevant and not true. Please?

Right.

I hope this isn't another thread that gets knocked off on THIS subject again.

Let everyone believe what they want to believe and let's move on.

This Gamersgate appears to be another D2D (and, yes, that's a good thing).

The transaction took literally five minutes. I registered, payed via Paypal, went into the MyGames section, and hit the download button... a little pop up informed me that the game was now downloading.

My serial key was in the MyGames section, right beneath the cover art of the game. No third party software to speak of. There aren't any install limitations either - other than what you get with the game itself. Just a really nice service.

I haven't installed Arcania yet, but if it goes well I'll be keeping this Gamersgate place in mind. Do these guys have sales?

Anyhow, I'll post back after midnight tonight and let you know if Arcania installed for me.

Oh weird.

Now some guy over at Steam is saying that GamersGate has just locked out North Americans.

I wonder, though, if you've already bought the game then are you still good to go? I already have my serial number. The download should still be in progress too. Damn I'll be happy if this works.

When I was creating my account, they did ask me which country I was in. That was mandatory. But how would they check? I mean, if they have to ask in the first place then doesn't that indicate that they don't know? So maybe register as a citizen of the UK?

EDIT: Yup, confirmed. North Americans are locked out now. Can't buy it anymore. I thought that it was a mistake. This release has been buggered up by the developer. I guess the guys at GamersGate didn't know about the North American thing. This is why I jumped on it this morning when I saw it. I sure hope this works. Damn that's cool. This game, for me, is like a WOW expansion for other people, or like an FPS guy getting a new Bad Company game or something.

I suppose you have to activate online after it's downloaded? Or does the key just "let you in"? I guess we'll see. Hey could you send me a copy once you finish downloading? I'll pay for it when it is on sale.

(Just kidding!!!)

Hope you don't get screwed here.

Worth reading.

The IGN review is evidence that Arcania is exactly what I had been hoping for. In this case, as in the case of Risen, the score is unimportant... the words are what matters here. A good review.

Now I just hope that this thing will install - I think it will. It looks like North Americans had a window of opportunity that lasted about two hours.

I saw the Gamersgate thing over at Steam, but my god don't go over there yourself. What is it with this game that makes people so uptight? Never have I seen so many crybabies assembled in one location. Same deal with the official forum. Is gothic the flagship series for males who live in their parents' basement or something?

They remember Gothic I and II in a different way than most. I personally love 2-3-Risen, but thought 1 was pretty effing crude, close to unplayable. I would be burned as unholy over there or at rpgcodex. Cult of Softwarality, perhaps?

the people are upset because they paid for something, were promised a delivery date, and had it taken away the day before. So now instead of playing the game for themselves they are reading posts from their friends overseas that are playing the game and saying how they love/hate it. So yes, they do have a right to be frustrated.

They've been complaining like stoats since the release of the demo. These people can't be pleased.

Also, if they're such huge fans, then how come they can't wait one week. Why are they so impatient? How long have they been waiting already?

They don't like this game anyway - that's the odd thing. They're pissed off about having to wait another week, having already waited for two years, for a game which they've played the demo of and hated.

I mean, how sad is that? They hate the demo, they hate JoWood, they hate Steam - the hatred threads are piling up over there. I think that for a huge number of these people, it's just time to move on.

eh, you can't fit all people into that box. there is no "they". your argument is reminiscent of the MW2 bans, people complained on the forums and they were brutally ridiculed.... until steam admitted their mistakes. You do have trolls that will pile on in any thread, but a lot of the people are not like that.

The people who are not like that need to be more vocal then.

It's difficult to respond to the people who are enthusiastic about this game when so few of them are posting. And here, once again, we return to this ultra hardcore Gothic fan base: I 'noticed' at the official forum how if a person posted enthusiastically about the demo that about fifty or so people jumped in to crap all over the thread. Even the moderators did it, and seemed to have an agenda against the game itself! Unbelievable!

I just think it's a shame that these people had to infect the Steam forums as well. I've seen at least a half a dozen threads at Steam that were identical (and I mean word for word) to the ones posted at the official forum. These people who hate this game need to deal with their anger.

Me, I'm two hours away from being able to launch this thing. If this doesn't work I'm going to kill somebody.

Download complete.

Time server authentication passed. Auto patcher kicked in and downloaded day one patch. Game launched and requested serial number for online authentication: passed.

That's it. I'm in.

First impression: game runs exactly as it did in the demo.

Very early observation:

You know those two goblins on the beach? Dead easy to defeat on Hard difficulty mode in the demo, right? Playing on Gothic level I've just been killed three times by them.

Edit: Holy Toledo, I had to load the game six times before I was finally able to defeat those two guys - and this is only the first quest. Button mashing will get you killed. You have to dodge and time your attacks precisely. You can get in maybe two hits before you have to get the hell out of there.

Seriously, good luck without using the 360 controller. For me, at the Gothic difficulty level, auto lock, which allows me to circle the two goblins, is essential. No way would I ever be able to succeed at this using the keyboard. Yikes, I think this is going to be a tough one.

Second Edit: using a bow makes combat WAY easier.

Also, maybe I just didn't know about this in the demo, but maxing out the graphics, and then turning down the shadows from Ultra to High makes the game run like butter. Performance on a GTX 480/Core i7 is amazing. The game just looks fantastic to me.

So actually maybe the performance is better than the demo. I don't know how it could get much better. I must be at 60 fps, easily.

I can't believe I was able to buy this title during that brief window of opportunity. Blind luck is what that was.

Anyhow, I'll definitely be playing New Vegas at this time next week, so it's nice to have this now. I actually got Fallout 3 running last night. Two years on and I find it to be more admirable than ever. Can't wait for New Vegas.

Edit: It's three o'clock in the morning... oh damn.

Good. I saw a lot of talk from people in the know and with the company swearing up and down that the demo's difficulty was nothing compared to especially Gothic level difficulty. Very glad to see this.

If anything that almost sounds too hard. Good.

Seriously, good luck without using the 360 controller.

Most of us did great in the demo without the 360 controller. :)

.

Auto lock is a console gamer concession if we're really honest about it. ;)

Did you ever need auto lock in Risen? ;) Of course not. You had to use real skill instead. ;)

The IGN reviewer, for one, disagrees with you and pointedly emphasized that they thought KBM was better at least twice and stated specifically why. Look over that review again.

http://pc.ign.com/articles/112/1127303p1.html

I know you're hot and thrilled about using a console controller on a high end gaming PC and I'm happy for you that you can play this game the way you want. :)

Obviously everyone wins here.

But I'm guessing in the end most of us are still going to be happy and prefer using KBM because it really is better most of the time and I'm betting it's the same here, too, if we get down to it. :)

What I'm going to be looking for is: How linear is this thing, and does the world open up for you? How tight are the rails on this thing?

Can you port your save from the demo? I can't say I'm really looking forward to playing that early part again.

I spent an hour playing last night, and will start the game in earnest tonight. I made it to the point where you have to buy the wedding band for your fiancé.

You can't import your save because the demo is missing stuff. For example, part of your first quest involves going into the field that was inaccessible in the demo because that guy was standing on the bridge blocking the way.

Honestly, melée combat in Gothic mode is super difficult. You can't compare it to the demo. Without a lock on, you're going to be jumping around most of the time. I just found it to be way more immersive by circling my enemy.

But again, acquiring a bow made combat much much easier. At this very, very, very early stage of the game, bows, in comparison with melée weaponry, are overpowered.

Had the chance to play last night :)

yea, definately different from the demo, it has you doing 3 quests to get permission to mary ivy. One of the new ones is you must hunt deer :D

but ya, i am playing on normal, and it is pretty easy, I take more damage jumping from high places than from enemies. Gonna start playing again now (have off today :D) so maybe some of the enemies get harder as you get off the "training" island :)

Key phrase: "For the main quest." And probably foot to ass to make it for the review deadline. Not terribly concerned about it.

So, the game isn't on rails once you leave the demo area? Do I get that right?

I never even made it into the cave where Diego is. I'm looking forward to playing this tonight though. Really looking forward to it.

are you free to kill anyone you want to in the towns? are there factions or is it linear?

I'm hoping the game is more like Gothic1,2,3 and less like Risen. Ultimate freedom is hard to come by in RPG's nowadays.

Played the demo.. Thought it was pretty meh honestly. The dialogue and voice acting turned me off to it, they were both terrible. I'll pass this up.

The game is very close to the demo. good review here where played through entire game and all quests in a 30 hour session.

What they note in the review is that they should have dropped the gothic name and just created a new IP. This is not gothic. no factions, no ability to affect outcomes, only real choice is in your character class. which I am not saying it is bad, it is just not gothic.

Okay, I just started playing again.

You know the beginning of that cave area, where you have to kill six loam vermin, and then the queen - way more difficult on the Gothic difficult setting. Everybody has a different ability to get through games, but for me the Gothic setting is very satisfying. It's a nice balance between the game being too easy, and the game being frustrating.

Even on Hard I thought it was just a little too easy, but at least right now, Gothic is the way to go. It might become too difficult for me. Who knows.

I'm going to go meet with the king now, and find out what happens after that. The demo ended abruptly, so I really want to see where it leads.

Okay, so it doesn't work like that - once you defeat the queen you're out. The evil king, meanwhile, has destroyed your village. Now you go off on your quest for vengeance.

Essentially, all that armor you get in the demo was just a feel for what's to come much later on. That's not how the actual game works. You don't acquire amazing armor and weaponry that easily. One kid over at Steam was laughing out loud about how, in the demo, he had gotten all this amazing armor in the space of ten minutes, and what a total joke the game was. The joke's on him. A demo is a demo. You can't 'review' a demo and assume that what you're doing is reviewing the game.
