Gothic 3 Technical help required

Okay, I'm running Gothic 3, fully patched (with the latest community patch) on a Core i7 - GTX 275 - VISTA 64 setup.

The problem I'm having is one of constant, or near constant stuttering - it happens whenever I swivel the camera around. Sometimes it's so bad that the entire thing just stops dead in its tracks. Meanwhile, the hard-drive will be thrashing like mad.

It doesn't matter how low I adjust the settings either - the game still stutters and hiccups like crazy.

There's this so-called font trick, which I'd like to try - the problem is that I don't know how to copy a font file into a .ttf file in VISTA 64. I seem able to open the Gothic3.ttf file by using font-viewer, or some such program, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to copy a font file INTO the Gothic3.ttf file. VISTA 64 just won't let me do it. Once the file is open, either right clicking or left clicking has no effect whatsoever.

Here are the instructions I found on the net.

Step 6 - that's what I can't do.

-----------------
1) First, you have to find your gothic 3 folder, it should be in C:\program files\gothic3.

2) Then find the file named "Gothic3.ttf" . If you don't know if it ends in .ttf, right click on the file and select properties, somewhere it should say "Type of file: TrueType Font File (.ttf)"

3) Rename the file to something else, it shouldn't matter what.

4) Use the search function on your computer to find another .ttf file by typing .ttf in the search bar, be sure to search everywhere and check the "include non-indexed, hidden, and system files" box.

5) Copy a file. Preferably Times New Roman, or Ariel. I chose Ariel

6) Paste it into your gothic 3 folder and rename it to "Gothic3".

The game should run a bit more smoothly.

Also, I posted about Gothic 3 a couple of months ago, after getting it in the mail. and said then that I thought it was a turkey - but now I think I was maybe wrong about that. First of all, I had been expecting Risen, and this isn't quite Risen - it's very much its own game. Secondly, I didn't know that you could adjust the graphic sliders. The game is actually damned beautiful if you crank everything up to the max. So much so that I really want to play it now - this stuttering though is driving me mad.

From what I've heard Vista always has a file organizing system running in the background, (I forgot what its called), That could be something you might could check into.

I ran Gothic 3 on Windows xp 32bit when I played it last, I would advise if you can afford it to upgrade to windows 7, its a lot better.

Does Gothic 3 stutter at all for you? Or would you say that the performance is silky smooth?

And by the way, I thought that the initial leveling of my character in Risen was difficult - man, in Gothic 3, the early leveling is just brutal. I'm literally being killed by birds that resemble big chickens.

I actually got this game out of curiosity after playing Risen. I tried it first using a borrowed retail disc but ended up buying the Steam version during their holiday sale. I've run both under Win 7 64 and had zero video problems. I'm running it on an unlocked x3 720/4890 1920x1200.

I played Gothic 3 over the holidays on my laptop (was away from my desktop)... specs are in my sig. It stuttered like crazy. I haven't tried it on my desktop, but I'll give it a go and see if it stutters even with the beast desktop I have.

Played it on the rig in my sig. I do remember stuttering, but only when entering a new area. After a little while it was ok. Gothic 3 fully patched was an AWESOME experience. Dont let anyone else tell you different. :)

It stands alone in the distinguished school of PC games that I have actually literally thrown in the garbage can.

Not really, some parts where a bit jerky but at the time I was using Windows XP.

It's called Indexing and it has nothing to do with gaming. It's also included in XP and 7. There is a difference between 'running' in consuming CPU processes or just an idle service. It idles unless you are moving media files to/from indexed locations, which is what it would be doing while gaming.

Okay, thanks, guys, I haven't sorted this out yet - but the gameplay isn't intolerable.

For some unknown reason the problem seems to alleviate itself a little bit fifteen minutes or so into the game, which is incredibly strange. I mean, I can start the game in some village, and there will be quite a bit of stuttering taking place... and then I can journey well away from the village and play the game some... but if I come back to the same village the stuttering will be much less pronounced. It's like the game just doesn't want to work well during the first fifteen minutes of play or something? Bizarre.

Anyhow, in one of those "what-the-hell-was-I-thinking-moments", I abandoned this game just two days after getting it in the mail (this was back in October). Don't ask me why I gave up on it, because this game really is a lot like Risen after all (which was what I had been hoping for). In particular, I love the depth-of-field effect (this was in Risen too). You can be standing beside a lighthouse, say, and of course the light-house will be in focus. As you walk away from it, the light-house will gradually become out of focus, until all you'll see of it is this sort blur on the horizon: it's incredibly effective. That wasn't the intent, I'm sure, but this makes it feel as though you're in this sort of fantasy realm.

The combat is not the strongest feature of this game - but I've come to learn that this is more of a hard-core role-playing game in that you're playing in order to level up your character. Leveling your character is more central to this game than anything, although the exploration is quite fun as well.

Here's why I would make for a poor reviewer: Two months ago I was telling people to stay away from this game, now I'm recommending it. You can buy it at Steam right now - if you're into role-playing, and if you've got a beefy rig, then you might wan to check into this thing.

It work good for me on my old, and new computer. The old computer had really long load times, but it worked.

The stuttering happened to me on my new computer, but only for a few seconds. Guess some draw the short straw. :D

I would try running the game in Windows Xp compatibility mode. Not sure if you have tried this already?

The storyline of the game isn't too bad, but fighting really isn't that great. A slight glitch that happened to me was when I clicked on "Learn Master Dual Weapons", when I didn't have enough points for it. The guy that was supposed to teach it to me, lost that dialogue option forever. The only way to fix was via cheating, which lead to me cheating for all the skills and all the items. Just for fun of course :D

The game defiantly gets better as you go on.

Holy crap, just to see what would happen, I re-installed the game and played it without the community mod. The stuttering was still there, but the game itself, in its vanilla form, looks downright ordinary.

That community mod is amazing. I had no idea how good it was until I saw the game without it installed.

If you buy Gothic 3 then whatever you do, install the community mod and crank all the sliders over to the max. Also, I had a second look at Risen tonight - do you know, I think that Gothic 3, with the community mod, might actually be better looking?

Gothic 3 is a lot better than what I had originally thought. I'm really starting to warm up to this game. It's taken a while though.

The latest community patches and mods are mandatory.
