I currently am running home vm lab on Asus Sabertooth 990FX MB with FX-6100 CPU, 32GB Ram, 4 nic card, etc.. I run WHS2011 with pass through raid card m1015 in IT mode with several HDD attached. Next is Sophos UTM 9.1 for home network. Windows 7 image, a server image with software i use for work. Nothing heavy duty. It runs 24x7 and used roughly 90 KWH of power. Not bad.

Now i was able to get a few servers from CL.
First up is a Supermicro 1U server.
MB - H8SGL-F
CPU - AMD 6174 12 core /115W TDP
RAM - 32GB ECC DDR3 1333 (might be lower spd)
HDD - 1 x 160GB Sata2 drive.
Case - SuperChassis 813MTQ-350CB
PSU - 350W Gold

Server 2 is a Supermicro 2U with 4 node
Each Node has:
MB - H8DGT-HLF
CPU - 2 x AMD Opteron 6234 w/ 12 cores @ 2.4 GHz
RAM - 64 GB of RAM (8 x 8 GB DDR3 @ 1333 MHz ECC)
Add-ON - 10 GB Nic? Not sure haven't removed it yet to confirm p/n.
Rest-----
Case - SuperChassis 827HD-R1400B
PSU - 2x 1400W Gold
HDD 4 x 500 WD Black Sata drive enterprise edition drives. ( i just looked at the other bays and found them lol)

I also got a Thecus N8800 NAS thrown in, but dont plan on using it. :)

So far I only tested them out to get a KWH ratting using a kill-awatt.
The 1U averages 125W no load.
The 2U averages 800ish with all 4 nodes on with no load, about 240 with one node.

I live in NH so electric rates are about .14c per KWH.

So this is the brainstorm part, I'm thinking of a few options.

Option 1-
Sell all the servers to recoup my money spent by 1.5 - maybe 2%? Buy intel D-1520 MB/CPU. buy ram later on.

Option 2
Sell 2U server, it uses too much power to be left on 24x7. Keep the 1U, maybe move the 64GB over to it and sell the 32gb in it. Drop kick the NAS to the GW. If I keep the 1U problem is Fans are super loud, esp on startup. IF i move my current VM over, I can only use 1 PCI card, so most likely the 4 nic card and use onboard 4 sata ports.

Let me know your thoughts, going to bed now.

PS I also run ad-hoc VMs using my desktop in the signature.

In summary you want to run a dedicated server to run 24/7 for a few low-load VMs with the occasional test VM(s)? If so, sell what you can and spend it on option 1.
 
I'm also going to nominate option 1. I had some 2U dell cloud servers with sweet hardware, but... the power / noise / heat got old REALLY fast. -__-
 
any suggestions on how to sell it? I can probably sell on forums or ebay the 8gb ram for 40 each so 32 sticks would be like 1200.

selling the whole 2u unit,the only example I found on ebay was priced at 6k. which I know is not realistic.

local Craigslist probably won't get me what I want.

looking for tips on pricing and selling it.
 
Forums, Craigslist and Ebay. Try and turn the difficult parts first that way if they don't sell then you can just use them. RAM is generally easy to sell if it's at the right price.
 
So I calculated using used prices from ebay that the 2U x 4 node is worth about 3500 in parts. the 1U is about 300. Any suggestions on shipping these if i go ebay route?
 
Very carefully. :) I would get rid of the rails (if you have them) and see if a local computer store or Lowes/Home Depot has boxes large enough. You could check Ebay for old server boxes too. (Always worth a shot.)

I was recently in a FedEx Office store and they provide a service:

More fees for the convenience .... but for some hard to pack/ship items,
I might use it in a pinch.

NVM ... it's so new I see locations are very limited with Atlanta, GA being one.

However ... they would have everything you need to pack and ship on the spot
if needed (without the drop off service).

pricing model seems steep.

How will I be paid?

If your items sells for more than $200 you earn 80% of the sales price.

If your items sell for between $50 and $200, you earn 70% of the sales price.

If your items sell for less than $50, you earn 60% of the sales price.

screw that. sell yourself on ebay, drop off and have them pack/ship it.
 
in short ..I agree (steep) ...don't want to muddy the thread on what I think
of (eBay, FedEx, PayPal) fees....was just an option for shipping as inquired by the OP.
 
If i go shipping route, ill prob do drop it off at ups and have them quote me to package and ship it.

Alternative option im looking into is finding some of those e-recycle shops new by and see if i can sell it a bargain too them, i still make some money, they can still make money off by selling it through their channels.

Anyone try that?
 
what do you guys think of the pricing? I based it off medium pricing I found for each component on ebay.
 
thanks for the suggestion, seems like many of the parts didnt turn up, prob since its limited to 6 months. when i searched ebay i looked at current and closed bids.

you have to take into account that an item not sold on ebay in 6 months probably has pretty low demand, and you may have to either sell it cheap, or wait for a buyer, which may take a while.

This is probably a total newbie question, but we all have to start somewhere right? So please be kind to me, I'm here to learn.

I am trying to figure out what is better for me: a dedicated or cloud server. I've read up on both and they both have their ups and downs, but I would like to hear some first-hand opinions. Can you give me any advice on which way to go?

All advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Questions are welcome. I will say that the search function for this forum answers a lot of questions. I still use to every so often. I would recommend that you start your own thread in this sub-forum so the OP thread is not hijacked. Once created I'd be happy to chime in.
