In a tower case which would be the best way t mount the HSF on the CPU? With the heat pipes like this:

or like this

=,\,l,/ all represent the heatpipes if you were to hold the HS so you could see thru the fins.

And why doesn't OCZ send their thermal compound out with these things, all I got was a plastic air packet with standard white thermal paste.
 
the best way to mount it is vertically, ie the fan parallel with your ram. the stuff they send is just about as good as any other tim, including as5. there was a test a few years back where it was shown that they all are within 2 or 3 degrees, including toothpaste. (but toothpaste wont last as long)
 
You should orient the heatsink so the fan is blowing air through it and toward your rear exhaust fan or fans.
