They recieved my card for RMA on Jan 17th. I get it back Feb 9th. I bet this makes some of you mad don't it? :D

Ahh, it's nice to have her back, though. So far, I've gotten to 560/590 on the stock cooler. ATiTool screams artifacting, but I can't see them in 3dmark03/05.

but umm......i wouldnt overclock that far if your seeing artifacts in ATItool. sometimes its really hard to notice if your actually artifacting slightly in 3dmark or not. i would trust atitool or better yet Doom3 to test your overclock. just don't burn her up is all im saying. ;)
 
It's the memory that causes the artifacting. What I don't understand is that this stuff is rated to 600mhz, yet it won't go anywhere near there? Maybe ATi has the mem timings too tight? Or doesn't give it enough voltage to run at 600mhz?

I actually leave it at stock for gaming and such.
 
Did you RMA it to ATI? Was it a brand new card? Did you get a new retail box?
 
Yeah, I RMA'd it to ATi. They only take the card back, so no, I didn't get a new retail box.
 
I'm so f-ing jealous.

My XTPE went out December 10th and I'm still waiting.

It's a sapphire card and will be my LAST sapphire card.
 
Rmad mine on like the 16th of last month, got it back yesterday. ATi said they did not have any cards instock, as to the amount of time involved.
 
Alright, sweet. Do they use the shitty white paste on the GPU? Cause I got mine used and it had AC5 on it. Should I put some shitty white paste on when I RMA my card?
 
I haven't taken the HSF off yet. I've got a Silencer 4 coming, I'll do it when it arruves. My Sapphire X800XT had some AS5 looking paste on it, but when I put the real deal on there idle temps dopped 5C and load temps dropped 10C.

I would put the white paste on there if you RMA is. ATi is stupid picky about stuff.

Yeah, it's crazy how they don't want to honor their warranty after you've voided it by modding and OCing your card.

I'm sure if you were them, and the money was coming out of your pocket, you'd want to supply hundreds (if not thousands) of OCer who had bought one card with an endless supply of cards, so they could run them far above spec and get those extra 4fps.

Alright, to be safe i will have the white paste by my side :D. Im not shipping it out anytime soon, so i can wait and see what kinda of thermal goop they have under a XT PE the "legit" ati way :rolleyes:

Same Rollo, he gave me an earful... although if you kill your card by overclocking, it deserves to stay dead.

You would never be able to duplicate the paste anyway. It's some sort of ceramic/glue. May be a version of Shin-Etsu.

The point of using AS5 would be to improve the lifespan of the vid card. Do you realize that every 10C drop in temp roughly doubles the lifespan of your components? Conversly, every 10C increase halves the lifespan.
I have found that applying AS5 doesn't improve the OCability of my cid cards. So it seems asinine that ATi would fuss over me trying to make my card last longer and function more reliably.
 
hmmm ati and nvidia should both use arctic silver 5 as a stock compound :) I know.. some companies do that..but for all of them..hehe that would be sweet...since they do overcharge for videocards anyways
 
I preordered mine from CompUsa waaaaay back in May 2004. I got it in mid-June and it was $531 shipped.

The only people who think it is "self righteous crap" are those who think they deserve to volt, clock, modify their cards however they want, and then have the "right" to return it to the manufacturer when it mysteriously fails. (because a "good, smart OCer" like them could NEVER damage a component)

X800XT PEs come from the factory OCd, they are a benchmarking card for ATI. I own one, love it. No one can OC a X800 XTPE to any significant perfomance gain simply by slavering some Arctic Silver on it and bolting on a Silencer- the RAM and core are already pretty much maxed out.

Why anyone would want to do so is way beyond me, the chance I would be put in the position of having to commit warranty fraud by "putting the old paste back on" far outweighs any trivial performance gains I can realize by OCing this card.

You OC parts that are clocked BELOW their limits, cheaper parts. There's no reason to OC the fastest, most expensive parts.
 
Actaully, it's 1.6ns RAM, and it's spec'ed for 600mhz. So, unless you run it at or above 601mhz, it shouldn't void the warranty. One could argue that ATI underclocks them.
 
welps....I just had time to open up my 6800ultra...and they have 1.6ns ram :)..but..I can't run them at 600mhz..so yeah.. anyways...I just added arctic silver 5 to the memory and gpu...but I can't test it out until my mobo comes in a day or 2...anything I should check before I throw it in my comp? while I am waiting..

I am so scared I might've did something wrong and killed it.....and this is my first time doing this too..heh tips?

But you see, the XT PE isn't OC'd to it's limits from the factory. It's a very mild OC. You just said to OC parts that are clocked below their limits - that's what we do. We raise our cards to their limits.
Besides, there are very signifcant performance gains to be had. I like benchmarking. While I might pick up only 4-5FPS in a game, I can pick up 700+ points in the 3dmark03/05 benchmarks with a good OC on my card. So for benchmarking, it's worth it.

To assume that a part failed becuase of an OC is asinine. You just said that the XT PE is OCed from the factory. But if it dies on you, you don't assume it was the OC. You figure it was a bad card. But it's OCed............so isn't that why it failed? What's the difference between a 20mhz OC and a 60mhz OC if you keep the temps in line? There is none. My OCed XT PE pulled lower temps with at 540/590 than it did at 520/560. So how could my mild OC have killed it? Heat is what kills a component not extra mhz.
 
I wonder if I were to send my ATI X800 Pro With Vivo and 1.6 Ram if I would get an identical card back?
 
Just sent my card back to Viper John for all of the performance (voltage) mods. Also going to put a larger TEC on it then the 80w that I had on there. wOOt!!!!!!
 
My XT PE blew up today while I was at work. Crap. Now I gotta send it back. Bad luck seems to be my closest friend. Ionly got it back from RMA 2 weeks ago!

I've got a 5900XT filling the gap until I figure out what blew it up. I've still got my X800 XT, but I'm not going to stick it in my PC until I know it was a problem with the card and not something else.
 
Since your sending it back now, what colour is the Retail thermal compound? :D Is it just cheap white stuff or some no name AS5?

So you've killed two of them?

I get the impression that you need to take a closer look at your overclocking methods. NEVER run a card so hard it artifacts.

Pushing an overclock too hard is why I have a dead 9800 pro sitting in my closet.

As to the morality of RMAing an overclocked card. Like I said, my dead 9800 pro is in my closet.

GregP24: WTF are you doing? You have got to be trying to change HSF or something and fucking up a chip/res on your card. Also, how would it fuck up when you are not even using it? Sounds like you system is all whacked.
 
I noticed a Chip on my GPU. It still works fine, but my OC has dropped. Is it worth RMA'ing it? It's a BBA X800 Pro Vivo with 1.6 Ram. Another question is, would I get the same card back, or a new card with vivo and 1.6 ram back? I know it depends if they can fix it, im just wondering if they will replace the card with an identical card back
