Was a lot of Newegg removing a card from my cart again and again no matter how fast I went but finally scored a STRIX OC edition. My heart was set on the gaming edition and there is my newbie question.

Is the OC version pretty much exactly the same as the Gaming edition just pre-overclocked?
And can I , well, de-clock it back down to standard Gaming edition levels so it doesn't run hotter and the lower fan speeds?

Sound and heat are my big concerns, my computer room gets really warm.

you will not have noticeable difference from one or other versions, all will reach as higher as possible boost clock between the power and thermal limits, it's just that the pre-overclocked has a more aggressive fan curve that can guarantee the advertised clocks, btw, that card have two states a gaming mode and a overclock mode, gaming mode is enabled by default while overclock mode should be enabled manually, so out of the box both STRIX OC and STRIX vanilla should reach somewhat similar boost clock. I wouldn't worry too much about that.

No reason to downlock. It will likely be right around the same sound level. These cards are efficient.

And the only difference is clocks. But the difference in clocks isn't enough to drastically warm up the chip.

In other words at stock speeds for both cards they should sound the same even though one is by default clocked higher.

Thanks guys. Have lowered my worries drastically.
Now to wait for this holiday weekend to pass so my card will ship ;)

Just got my STRIX OC yesterday. If you install asus' gpu tweaker program you can set it to lower clocks pretty easily. As a side note, if the GPU isn't being used the fans legitimately turn off - as I type this they aren't spinning at all. My H100i makes way more noise.

I have yet to see a vanilla edition of the ROG Strix, at my side of the pond there is only one version - the OC version which has a 1,936 Mhz clock boost. The box doesn't even have the word 'OC' on it! Its only the specs which states that it has a max boost clock of 1,936 Mhz that tells you its the OC version.
