The Asus motherboard I had turns out to work fine with ESXi just had to set the SATA controller to AHCI, the onboard NIC was not supported so I had to order a cheap Intel PRO 1000 card for it to install. Next phase is to get a Dell Perc 5 which will hopefully work on my motherboard for a larger data store and increase RAM to 8GB. The entire system will eventually move into a nice NORCO 4020.

I should have a pretty nice whitebox for learning purposes once this is complete.

I plan to learn Vmware, Server 2008 with Hyper V and how to configure different RAID levels and storage.

Welcome to the virtualized world!

Have fun with it and learn a lot at the same time! I had the same issue with my MSI board that I purchased - I had to enable AHCI for ESXi to see my drives, and deal with a NIC issue as well. It is great though, I have two servers running and a Win 7 vm, which is great when I am on different PCs and just want to use the same desktop.

I have about 8 gigs in the system now, when memory gets a little less expensive for this board I will prob boost up to 16 gigs and get another board for the 8 gigs I have now. That is a little while away though.

very nice looking, i like, i just ordered my self a intel server board, and 8gigs of ram all for 200$. Now to buy the quad core xeon and a case.

However, i have not decided on the case yet :(
