got midi keyboard, need midi program

Title says 50% of the thing, i judt bought a Midi keyboard and the program that came with it ... is not so much powerfull.
I readed a little about VST's. I dunno what they actually are, or how to use it, but Ive found some interesting effects I wanna use. (but how??)

vsts are software synthesizers u run on a computer
you can use them standalone with your midi keyboard or run them in a daw application for midi programming like Acid, Cubase, Sonar, FLStudio, etc...
some vsts I've used are z3ta+, absynth, kontakt, reaktor, nexus, vanguard and battery 3(for drum sampling). I'd recommend z3ta+ because it's the cheapest one I mentioned but still quite powerful and user friendly.
