Yep, I got the PIII 550 up and running. It's currently chugging through a Tinker WU (so is my main box, oh well. I think the computer I borged is doing a tinker WU as well... God, I hate these thigns. They take so long on the PIII/P4s... A CeleronM 2.8 should be able to do a WU in less than a day, right? Why has this thing taken a week for one WU? Granted, my girlfriend turns it off at night, but still...

One week is long. It's because the machine is not on 24/7. Would it be possible to have it running all the time?

Im going from memory here, so bare with me. I had a 450 running 24/7 and on some of the larger tinkers, 70 pointer ones, it would take almost 2 weeks to get done. So going on that I would say since its a part time box thats about right for tinkers.

One of my machines is a PIII 667. IIRC, it does one of those 70 point tinkers in ~60 hours. Those 50+ point Gromacs proteins take over 45 hours I believe.

Sure would be nice if they boosted the point values of the tinkers by about 30-50%. Maybe people would stop deleting them to get a Gromacs

My Dual G5 is running a 70 point Tinker right now.

The G5 takes around 9 minute per frame. I have a dual so it's X 2. 142 points for 2+ days work running 24 X 7.

There were a LOT of Tinkers released recently, all the distrib forums up and down the web are complaining about it. I'm glad I dont have a slower machine doing this, having a machine drag for a week on this would be massively teh suxor. :D

My 2400+ has just finished running a 70 point Tinker.
36:13 at 2Ghz.

Just finished my first Tinker in weeks.

Luck........:D

For the people that delete tinkers, don't. Its for the damn science. The faster we get done with them, the faster we move onto better gromacs :)

FOLD ON!!!

You let your girl friend turn your box off at night??? Dude, you can always get another girl friend..;)

Boost point values ? Delete work units to get better points ?

Damn.

A big 400 Tinker was my first wu. Took 5 days on a PIII 850.
Since then I've gotten 5 Gromacs in a row. They do finish a lot faster than the Wankers. Currently working on p_1031.
Got my salvaged from the neighbors trash, 433 Celeron together.
Formatted, updated, tweaked to death Win/2000 Pro,256mb ram.Networked to my lan on cable. I named it Darth.
The question is " Can Darth fold?" Or is he doomed to the Dark Side?

Haha, well, she lives in another state right now, so it's not like I can really do anything about that. :p

I'm hoping to get a new mainboard, a dual slot 1 board, but I can't find any for cheap. On top of that, I don't have a paired CPU for this PIII (it's my only one), so I'd have to buy a second 550 or a pair of 667's.

Yep, that thing has been running for 4 days now and isn't even half way finished with this WU. I might delete it and go on to another WU, just to get something that won't take so long.

I wish I had another case for the Celeron 400. Heh, screw that thing, my PIII 450 would probably be faster than it. :p

The G5 takes around 9 minute per frame

This PIII 550 is taking almost 30 minutes per frame...

A lot of people do. If a tinker lands on my work PC (P4 2.4) I delete it to get a gromacs since the computer gets so little uptime (only 8 hours a day with fairly heavy processor usage) and P4's are so slow on the tinkers.

On that 667 when it was being used by someone as a primary system and turned off at night, I would delete tinkers (or large gromacs) on it as well.

Anything else I'll let run the tinkers.

Just for the record the WU the G5 is chewing on is a

p638_L939_K12M_ext

X 2. 49% done and another 30 hours to go. :(

Anyone with a fast AMD have a per frame bench they could give me? This 1.8 is doing them in just under 9 minutes per. I'm curious to compare.

Not a fast AMD, but my Cely has a frame time of 33min, 32 sec.

Ugh... I'm churning through a Tinker on my main system right now... looks like won't be done 'till Wednesday but I'm guess that it will take longer because I've got to use the system for some video encoding today and tommorrow... ugh.

Ah well I was hitting a cool 6 minutes a frame for a while... that was nice.

You make it sound like you're only running one client of folding@home... and because you have two processors, shouldn't you be running two clients to gain the maximum benefit?

Those people that get Tinkers: are you using all the correct flags? -advmethods -forcesse (or equivalent) -forceasm

I think -advmethods is the critical one to use, though... I have been using these flags for about two months, and haven't gotten a Tinker since...

Even with the flags you can still get the occasional Tinker when that is all that the servers are dishing out. No biggee.

Last week there was a "SNAFU" (Stanford Now All F**** UP) when they were assigning Tinkers almost exclusively.

Even using -advmethods I got a slew of them which are just starting to finish off.

I'll try adding the -forceasm flag to the PIII machines, if it helps I'll add it to the AMD systems. :)

Oi... just checked the WU list and found out why this one is going so slow... It's one of those MEGA-tinkers that net 70 points a piece... Well that will be good for my score... but it is just so much more satisfying when the WUs are flying off your system at record speeds.

Uhh huh. Hence the reason some Folders have a smaller point/unit ratio than others. Had a chance to do a bunch of 5 pointers ;)

Thanks for the benches on the AMD's. I tell ya, theres no mystery on Tinker units. AMD p0wnz all, and Ghz wins the day. 2330-1800=530 Mhz clock advantage for you. And come to think of it, that's about exactly what should happen. Tinkers are not altivec aware, I dont think. So no SIMD on my end.

I'm gonna hit ya with a Gromac next and post that time....

My AMD 3000+ stock speed is not much faster on Gromacs than the mac....less than a few minutes of difference for the total WU.
