got FreeNAS working( mini review)

hey everyone i just played around with FreeNAS and got it installed on my laptop with a 60gb hdd, it was extremely simple to use and setup and now i have a nice NAS drive on my home network. http://www.freenas.org/

you just download the FreeNAS ISO burn it to a cd then boot from it, the setup is extremely simple, i chose the option for it to create 2 partitions one for the FreeNAS software itself then the rest is used for storage, then you just have to assaign it a IP adress on your network and you are all set, just leave the freenas box alone and from any computer on your network open your web browser and point to the IP adress of the freenas box and you get a really simple to use web based gui to set all the settings.

after you mount the hdd and everything its ready to use, its by default set to WORKGROUP but you can change it to whatever you want then it will show up as a computer in your network open it up and there is a share drive you can copy or read from, what i did was map it as a network drive.

now i need to build a real FreeNAS box with some serious storage space any reccomendations on some good HDD's and RAID card? :D

It is far beyond slick. I really need to get it installed to a USB key so that I can just boot for that and free up another spot for storage.

Before you jump into the hardware, be sure to look around a bit to make sure the card you are looking at is supported.
 
i heard it was okay - but can not limit permissions, basically you either can write to it, or you cant, you can not specify folders and the such....
 
I tried FreeNAS awhile back, pretty slick for what it is. Some problems with it tho (for me), the biggest of which software RAID5 is virtually broken (Not his fault). You have to jump thru a few hoops to get it to work which doesn't make me feel like its going to be all that redundant :p . The permission setting that was mentioned above was another (Had to set all that from a command line, annoying). Given time I'm sure it'll come out to be a pretty nice NAS solution, just needs more development time. In the mean time I just went ahead and setup a pretty simple Linux box. It seems Linux is a little more mature in the software RAID/LVM area.
 
i would like to do linux boot off usb i have a extra 256 stick alying around but i suck at linux. and dont think i could ever get the proper raid drivers tow ork :(

so nas wont allow you to write tot he drives? whats the point of using it.

also any support of jbod?

no this will let you do anything but only if you format it with UFS, NTFS is not yet supported, i dont think it really even makes a difference for just data storage
