Hey everyone, i have a bit of a dilemma.

Yesterday i impulsively bought a new PS3 40Gb on eBay for $590 AUD (which is about $530 USD). They retail for $699 or $640 USD (yes, we get RAPED here on console prices)

The problem is, i don't know whether to keep it or not (getting it on monday). Ive been mostly a PC gamer, and to be honest have lost interesting in gaming a little (i still want there to be a good games selection though). Ive owned a 360 and have played most of the good games on that machine, either on the 360 itself or on PC (since i have a pretty fast comp). I sold the 360 about 6 months ago...

The thing that appeals to me about the PS3 is that apparently it is a good media center machine. Im also interested in blu-ray movies since i have a Samsung HDTV (although its only 1366x768 with HDMI). How good is the PS3 in terms of blu-ray movie playback on a 720p HDTV and in general as a media center? Can i stream DivX/XviD content over from my PC to play on the PS3?


The thing i don't like is knowing that its based on "old" tech. For example, the RSX is based on G70, which is quite outdated. I remember owning a 7950GT 512mb and taking it back and swapping it with an 8800GTS because it was so slow.

So i guess i don't want to be spending so much on a machine if a cheaper xbox 360 is going to get better game support etc.

What do you guys think??

Anyway to the OP, look at the catalog of games and ask yourself if there anything you want to buy on the PS3 that you really want to play and/or if you see yourself buying a good amount of blue-ray movies.

Normally, if I have doubts immediately after a big purchase, I usually take the item back or sell it.
 
I would absolutely keep it, especially if you know you're interested in high def movies. The ps3 is among the cheapest bluray players, yet its probably the best one also. The picture quality is superb and its the only one that's guaranteed to be future proof against any new profiles or other updates they make to the standard.

As for it being old technology, I'm not sure I necessarily agree with that. Since your target resolution in most cases is 1280x720, its not fair to map it directly to pc hardware. The ps3 is a much different architecture and if games like Little Big Planet and Resistance 2 come close to what their developers are promising, you'll see how powerful the system really can be.

I agree. Games like Uncharted and R&C:ToD are, imho, graphically comparable to most current PC games. With Crysis being the notable exception.
I love my PS3. Whether I'm using it to watch upscaled DVD's, blu-ray movies, play games, or just idly browse the internet - it was worth every penny I spent on it.
 
I've never understood selling consoles at a loss. Sure, I don't really think a PS3 is worth owning until later this year (assuming you have a 360 now anyway) but there's not going to be enough of a price drop to make it worth selling now and buying back later.
 
Just keep in mind that it is a dedicated machine. So it will run games that are optimized for that hardware. A console will always have an edge on PC gaming in one respect. The games are written for specific hardware and not for a general group oif things people may or may not have. Also like you said you would like to see some High Def movies and this is the way to go now that HD-DVD is dead.

Heck you bought it. May as well see what you bought. Enjoy Spiderman 3 (I think this still ships with the 40 gig version.) and tell us what you think of Blue-Ray.
 
yes you can stream. it will play divx/ xvid, and im hoping for proper mkv support at some point.

do you have a ps2? there is a fuck ton of games that are good that you could pick up very cheap and have tons of fun with.

its a great bluray player. pretty much the best one out imho.

You really can not compare console to PC hardware like this. Go look at some of the better PS3 games in HD, and you will be impressed what a developer can do when they have direct control over the hardware and a fixed resolution to work with. There is so much overhead and poor optimization in PC applications compared to console.

Rachet is a good example of what the PS3 can do. The game looks amazing, and Rachet is basically a 1st gen game.

He has a 40GB model, No backwards compatibility.
 
I would keep it. Use it as your media hub at the very least. If you get bored with that throw linux on it and play around in that.

This year PS3 is finally going to get quite a few titles that make me want to pick one up. I already have a Wii, Xbox 360 and a high end PC with titles coming out for all those that I want but titles like LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Tourismo 5 and others like that really make me want one. Not to mention bluray winning the physical HD format war.

Unless you can't afford to keep it I would try to find a use for it. It's more flexible than the 360 is for doing interesting things with.
 
this is definitely the year of the PS3. I would keep it.
 
Like others have mentioned, there are good games out now and even more to come later in the year. It can do media playing/streaming and it's currently the the best Blu-Ray option on the market.
It might drop in price at some point, but probably not THAT much. You have to note that each time they've come out with a new version, they've actually scaled back a feature or two as well.
Depending on your interests, there's also the option of installing Linux or Folding@Home, too.
The PS3 was pretty "meh" for about 9 months, but it's now hit it's stride. The good games have started to hit, sales are up, and it seems like the game creators are learning to work with it better, too.
 
i got a ps3 recently i absolutley love it
i got the 40gig verison
unless you have a ps2 library your fine with the 40giger
anyways i got burnout paradise its a awesome game and nhl 08 and fight night
i love these games and they play great on the ps3
also the ps3 is better than a standalone blu ray player because its firmware is upgradable for the newer blu ray formats and stuff
also 100 dollars cheaper than most blu ray players

i also am a pc gamer and i own a hi end pc with a 8800GTX
i think the ps3 is the closes console to a PC considering you can use a usb mouse and keyboard for some games.
 
Keep it. Everyone is saying that 2008 is the year for PS3. Lots of big name games coming out.
 
Well from the looks of it you got it at a good price. You could keep it for a while and if you find you don't like all the media functions or the games you could at least sell it for what you bought it to break even. Why not give it a shot for a while?

These are most of the games that keep me pretty busy. There are some that I've only got around to renting (Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Lair), but you'll probably find there’s more than enough games to fill a void of time.

I have the 60G, so PS2 games qualify for me.


This also does not include some of the games I've purchasd from the online store.
 
Uncharted is a beautiful game, the game play is solid, story is good... MGS4 is coming, R&C is great fun, Heavenly Sword is also worth a rent. I own 9 PS3 games at the moment and have LBP, MGS4, and Resistance2 on order.

If nothing else use it fold and join the [H]orde

 
as an xbox 360 fan and a PS3 owner......I just now think the PS3 is starting to get interesting.

There are several reasons...The PS3 I've had for 8 months never had any good games --- that's finally starting to change.

PSN is starting to have some good games finally - see Pixel Junk Monsters - purchase it.....love it. It is a fantastic "arcade" equivalent game -- basically a great tower defense game that allows co-op.

Blue-Ray is top notch and since it won the format war your in good shape with the PS3.

There is a MASSIVE ps2 library avaiable....I know BC isn't so good on the 80GB and 40GB PS3's....but I just started and am about 3/4 through God of War and dang it's a good game!

The PSP (I recently purchased) finally interfaces in cool ways with the PS3 - Remote play, PSN games etc.

This is the first month ever where I've played more PS3 than Xbox 360, and it looks like next month might be the same thing as I try to play through God of War2 and enjoy my PSP interface stuff. (BTW, mine is a 60GB that I got for $350 new through Sony Style with a Credit Card signup offer)

THE BIGGEST PROBLEM FOR THE PS3 is that games that come out on both consoles look better on the Xbox 360 95% of the time, and more-over there is the achievement addiction on the Xbox360 which is a bigger force to reckon with than anything PS3 has at the moment. So PS3 will be pretty much exclusive titles only and PS2 titles which I never played since I had an xbox and no PS2. The PS2 library is awesome because it's matured and there are tons of reviews which tell me which games are the best. I can play the best games of the last 7 or so years at extremely reduced prices, upscaled to 720p on my projector....If future titles turn out like God of War - man I'm set for a long time as I play through the best PS2 titles. (Emulation on 360 SUCKS for original xbox titles) The original PS3's did the right thing by including the PS2 hardware......with this in mind --- if anything you should sell or trade that PS3 your purchased for a 20GB or 60GB model with the built in PS2 chipset.
 
I'd take a look into the PS3 catalog and view trailers/gameplay of the games you'd think are your type that you'd enjoy, and then consider if its worth keeping for those games .. the blu-ray is also great on the ps3, so IMO: keep it. If this was last year, I'd probably say sell it, but the ps3 is getting better and better this year.
 
For godsake, keep it. I was in the same boat as you. I didnt play much on my Ps3 so I sold it. I couldnt justify keeping since I only used it as a media center. Now that I bought a new TV (Sony Bravia 52XBR4), I am regretting selling it. And you will too. Now I am in the market for a Playstation 3.
 
Keep it. Ports have gotten better since the 07 holiday season. There are a ton of games coming out on BR and the PSN. There already great PSN games to have as well. BR movies, as you are interested in look amazing.
 
Well if you bought it for $530 USD you might as well keep it. Cause the best you would be able to sell it at in the US or possibly Australia is around $400 at the most. And i'm talking USD currency.

The PS3 is only going to get better especially with the new "home" it's coming out with. That's going to make it amazing. I'm trying to sell mine as we speak, only because I need some extra cash right now, but will most likely buy another in a few weeks. I've hardly played it though. Probably 20 minutes total playing time on it.
 
I just recently bought a 40 gig and have been pleasantly surprised. It seems that after a rather shoddy launch and the smoked cleared from the hype machine the system is a strong piece of hardware. I have all three consoles and an okay pc but I split my time pretty equal between my 360 and ps3.

You already bought it, might as well keep it

BR movie wise, im spoiled... no way im going back to dvds on my lcd (too bad br hasnt arrived where i live ><)
Games... they r most entretaining (DMC4, Uncharted, COD4, Resistance and Motorstorm)
Only tried online once on Resistance and it was quick and painless
 
I would sell it or get a new tv myself. Think of it this way... imagine having a really nice pc setup capable of really high resolutions, but being stuck with a monitor that can only run 1366x768. I don't see why more people don't think of the new consoles (except the wii) this way. Work on getting a tv, and THEN you can take full advantage of Blueray and decent graphics for a console.

I wouldn't have given up pc gaming without having a 1080p television/monitor.
 
you do realize that very few games are actually 1080p ? Most games are 720p (and they look pretty darn good on my 40" Bravia @ 720p)

i would never buy one for that reason.... that and i cant think of 1 game i would want on it that isnt on xbox360

keep it for blu-ray since it won dvd format war.... *peers over at his hd-dvd play and crys :(*

I can't think of one game I want on 360 that isn't on or is coming to the PC :eek:

Anyway, the PS3 has some good exclusives and since the OP is interested in HD media, it would behoove him to keep the PS3. It would save him the time and money of purchasing a blu-ray player later, and it is future proof against all profile updates.

I just don't get why my PS3 Games, 90% of the time, say on the back that it supports up to 720p, hardly any say 1080P, whereas with my 360, the games mostly say 1080P supported on 90% of games.

Why is that I wonder???

The fact is the vast majority of both systems games render at 720p or less. I doubt Halo 3's box points out the game is 640p and upscaled. Same for CoD4. I think it's only 600p on both systems. GT5 was advertised at 1080P but it's looking to be 1280x1080, not full 1920x1080.

Because the 360 does its own upscaling. Most games are made at 720P (or lower in some cases) and anything higher than that is simply upscaled. The truth of the matter is a 1080P tv can ONLY show 1920x1080P at all times, any image below that is upscaled to the TV's native rez of 1080P to be displayed. So in reality a PS3 game at 720P is getting upscaled by the TV to 1080P instead of the console doing it, and basically looks identical.

You do realize Blueray is 1080p and he already sold the better console for games.. his 360. If he wants it for Blueray it's kinda pointless without having a 1080p t.v.

He wanted opinions, I gave mine.

I notice a difference setting my 360 on 720p or 1080p, not sure about the rest of ya.
 
I would say sell it and wait. Not because PS3 won't ultimately be worth owning, it absolutely will--but IMHO, you're better off waiting for the library to mature and the price to drop even further. Personally, I'll be getting one once the Slim model comes out, and not a moment before ;)
