Ok, so I needed a new card reader for my Gaming rig. So, I went to CompUsa and picked up one of their generic 9 in 1 card reader hubs.
It's a pretty solid unit. Mounts in a 5 1/2" bay. And the card reader portion of it is removable.
What I don't like about it is the wiring harness. It's a pretty easy harness to use. If not boardering on ghetto. What they expect you to do is plug the thing in, mount it in the rack then remove one of the covers off the back of the case and fish the wires through it and plug them into the provided USB ports on the back. Which basically gives you a 2.0 HUB in the front of the case now as well as a card reader 1394 port and sound jacks.
Which is all well and good. If I didn't build a $4k rig and don't care if it looks ghetto.
So, I was wondering, do they make a different type of harness I can use? That I could possibly connect to one of my many USB 2.0 ports on the MoBo itself?
The other thing I'm thinking is that I have an extra 3 1/4" bay. And the removable card reader part of it is all I really want, I could honestly care about moving my USB ports on the back of the case to the front, especially since I've already got two 2.0 USB ports ont he front as well as a 1394 port and a sound port. So I don't really need the 5 1/2" portion of the card reader. So, the small card reader part will almost fit in the spot snugly, I'd have to go ahead and make a plexiglass holder for the reader which, is fairly easy to do; that would hold it in place in the 3 1/4" drive slot.
I have pictures of what I am talking about however the site that I usually upload my pictures to is having some difficulties now so I'll have to wait on that.
