Ok guys, I'm going to build a computer for my friend, he doesn't need a hard drive, sound card nor sound system, keyboard, monitor or mouse as he has all of those already. He wants to have a a64 system, but I don't want to get him a system that isn't up to par so to speak. So basically we are going to be ordering all the parts from newegg. If you guys could give me some help here with the parts as to what he should get it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I HATE VIA, so I 'd suggest a different motherboard... is there not another motherbaord that supports the 64 bit athlons?

i guess i'll bite. If he wants to OC (not that you can do much OCing with the A64's so it seems...) then the a64 3000+ is the cheapest a64 chip, but it still rocks, and then i'm not too sure about a mobo but i have looked a LITTLE BIT and three kinds came up, the Albatron K8 board, the Gigabyte K8NNXP or something (VIA K8t800 chipset), and the MSI K8T Neo. I suggest doing your own research on a motherboard, though.

As for RAM, you don't need ECC or Registered for plain ol' A64's which was a subject of confusion (not so) recently, so i'm gonna suggest either the Hi Perf Mushkin Level 2 stuff (pricey!) or some Corsair XMS similar to what you are running, cuz we all know that is good stuff. Mebbe even some of the Kingston HyperX 4000? :)

A Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro is only $210.50 atm on the Egg, but the R420 is coming out in a month or something, right? so mebbe wait on the vid card? its your choice.

HSF? Gonna have to be whatever Thermalright is compatible with A64 procs (if there are any yet) b/c thermalright just kicks ass (don't forget a 92mm Panasonic Panaflo ;))

Case: The illustrious Chieftec Dragon Series Full Tower is back in stock on the 15th for $70, check that shiznit out, its aluminum with a side window and 5 spots for fans, and all those features make the pricetag delicious.

PSU: everyone else is gonna say Antec, so i'm gonna say the Thermaltak PureSilentPowerAwesomeSupreme Ultra or whatever its called, its a 420w PSU with Active PFC for only $53, and it seems to be a pretty solid performer.

I am getting tired now so i will just stop there, but that should all be under $1000, if its not then oh well...go buy the Barton Mobile 2500+ and the DFI Infinity Ultra instead, perhaps? :D :D :D
 
There is the Chaintech ZNF350 or whatever it is, and it uses the nForce 3 chipset, but it seems to be the only nForce3 mobo worth buying from what i've read/seen (which means i could be completely wrong)
 
Via chips are better for the A64 as of right now, what you've got there checks out fine.
 
Changed the ram to what I have in my sig except for the twinpack.
 
Spending $67 on HS/fans then getting value ram does not make since to me. I got my 3200+ for $252 from mwave, if you want to save a little you might want to try there. Also arn't 9800 PRO's about $200 now? I know Dell just had a deal for $190.
