I am probably the only human that does not have a cell phone. We had several cell phone venders here at work yesterday and I talked to all of them. The tablet or pad was interesting in that I would have more room to type, my fingers are just too big to really get a good feel for typing on a cell phone.
The only way to use a pad for a phone is to use google voice or skype. Anybody here with experience on this issue?

No, I am in this club also. I lost my cell phone in a thunder storm and when nokia wanted $110 to replace the phone I just declined and ended my service. That was 4 years ago. I have not really needed it. The wife and I still find ways to communicate when we need to.

My fingers are too big to type on a laptop, I can't even imagine how people do that on a cell phone.

pretty easy to type on, but i have small fingers/hands, so it's understandable for larger folks w/ huge hands.

As for Google Voice
You know that Gmail can call any phone in the USA for free right?
And I use Google Voice to screen all my calls if not someone i know. They call, i dont answer, gets sent to voice mail, i get an email w/ the transcript and the recorded voice mail, and i can decide to call back. All for free. Google voice gives you a phone # for you to give to ppl, and that's it.

You can buy minutes for long distance/callin gout of the Country, and it's pretty cheap.

That technology is amazing to me. Thanks.

I use google voice just for my Voice Mail.. VVM with my phone through Tmo was flake where it take like an hour to get a message.

On another note.. I am also a big guy & have big hands w/ big fingers.. Its not problem texting on a phone with a touch screen.. Most modern phones are adaptive enough to know what you meant. It was alot harder texting on a hard keyboard (last one I had was a Tmobile Dash). & I have a hell of a time with my wifes netbook.

my 2 problems with google voice:

- it adds a small delay to your call. kinda like the bluetooth lag you get on headsets. it's small but noticeable
- voicemail is a problem. i have google voice forward to my home, office, and cell phone. if i dont answer, it's a race to which phone picks up first and where the voicemail is left. i'm waiting for gv to allow you to adjust the number of rings before voicemail answers.

What kind of cell phone.. Maybe just get a GV app for it if there is one & call it a day.

nah, the gv app doesn't help.

the problem is my home phone is VOIP, my office phone is hardline, and my iphone on at&t. almost every time the office phone will ring first and somehow get to voice mail before google voice.

realistically, i need the ability to control how many rings each line gets before voicemail, and then set google voice to have 1 less ring.

I'd like to agree on the TMo VVM. It's rubbish. It took it like two days to notify me i had a voicemail from a client. At that point i said the hell with it, and went to google voice.

I've never seen that before.. are you talking about using GMail to place calls? If so, then I have seen that, but i don't really think that's a biggie. It's like 1-3 seconds delay, and my phone has the same delay when i pick a # to call off my contacts list.

When I got my T-Mobile G2 it was already set up to use Google Voice rather than T-Mobiles voicemail. I just rolled with it and I'm happy I did because it's awesome. I set up another GV account to use as my work voicemail. The transcription isn't great, but it's good enough to give you the gist of why someone is calling.

I have a problem with Google owning my phone #. Who knows what they are doing with the info from it.

I use Google Voice for voice mail. Hands down, greatest voice mail service ever.

Unlike my carrier's voice mail, I do not have to call in and sit on my the phone forever going through all my voice mails and frantically remembering or writing down the number of who called. I have a widget on my android phone that displays last voice mails and from whom with part of the mail translated to text as Google Voice translates all voice mail into text. The voice app allows me to play them directly off my phone without having to call in. I also have it set up to sms the text translations as well as email me the newest voice mails.

Far as using Google Voice as a telephone service, I messed around with their Gmail/Voice web app and seemed to work alright. I haven't tried using Google Voice on my cell phone as don't really have a need other than maybe international calls.

I use Google Voice for VM as well getting unlimited minutes on my cell phone.

I can't figure out why people give Google their personal info. All they are is an advertising company. They want your personal information to make money off of you.

Give google my info to make money off of me, or give some other company my money. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Why does it matter? You live 100% off the grid, no credit cards, no car, no internets (o... wait...)

What do you think will happen if you let google "own" a cell #? You already pay like < $1,000/yr to a cell company for the privlidge to have ppl call you whenever they want wherever they want.

i'm not trying to instigate a flame war, it's just curious why ppl are so against stuff like this. :/

if it enhances your life, why not?

How do I disable google voice on my rooted EVO, and just go back to the standard Sprint VVM ?

Because they offer excellent products in return. The price for the awesome free stuff is ads - that is a price I am more than willing to pay.

Just don't sign in to google voice...

me likey. Easy way to get a new phone number without switching phones or leaving your old one. I live in a different area code than my phone number and I needed a local number for my work, so it's super convenient.

As with Gmail, Google can data-mine my web browsing habits all they want, I'm still only going to spend money on stuff I actually want to buy.
