Google Inc just announced plans to unveil a mobile phone technology platform with support from more than 30 companies. The new platform will be called “Android.”

Google said it would hold a conference call later in the day to discuss the system with speakers from T-Mobile, owned by Deutsche Telekom, Motorola, High Tech Computer and Qualcomm Inc. It said the system, known as Android would be "the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices."

I wonder how a completely "open" platform will perform in the cell market and how people will react to it, good & bad.

Maybe i'm not thinking 'big picture' enough, but I don't get what the big deal is. I'm not saying this to dark/sarcastic or a pain-in-the-butt. If you can explain it to me, please, do. An open source mobile operating system? Ok, I get that it will be 'mobile specialized,' but how is this really any different than a customized linux distro???

It gives more of a centralised development platform for mobile linux, linux in it's current form couldn't compete with Symbian as there were so many developers, all working in isolation from each other and so not sharing advancements. Linux lost the fight in Japan, they were supposed to be 50/50 with Symbian (NTTDocomo dictum) but that is currently running about 77/23 and then even the most stringent supporter in the global arena, Motorola, has now hung it's hat back in the Symbian arena for a lot of its new phones.
Having people working towards a common goal on Linux could bust the market open completely.

Only tiny elements of the Linux mobile phones were open anyway, all the GSM stack and the like was still proprietery.
