"Google has begun testing sponsored ads inside its Gemini-powered AI Mode, placing labeled "sponsored" links at the bottom of AI-generated responses. Engadget reports:[A] Google spokesperson says the result shown is akin to similar tests it's been running this year. "People seeing ads in AI Mode in the wild is simply part of Google's ongoing tests, which we've been running for several months," the spokesperson said. The push to start offering ads in AI Mode was announced in May. The company also told 9to5Google that there are no current plans to fully update AI Mode to incorporate ads. It makes sense. Ad revenue for many websites that rely on Google Ads is down. GenZ is switching to using LLMs over search.
These companies have to find a way to monetize the trillions of dollars they are dumping into LLMs, as well as not piss off the website owners who are losing revenue.
Google AdWords will probably be the next thing they incorporate.
 
It's been so long sense I have seen an ad, I can't even remember a time when I saw one.

It's...almost like... ads don't serve their purpose.

I'm sure there is copious amounts of data that say otherwise, but I've blocked ads as much as possible in every aspect of my life. I think highway billboards are the worst offender now. I'm still impulse buying stupid shit lol.

I have an unhealthy hatred of ads.

Give it time and the AI responses won't be information you can use anymore but just one big advertisement to go pay someone. There won't be a result of how to fix your dish washer but instead telling you that you're better off paying your local service dealer to fix it for you, or sending you to a store to buy a new one. Most of the websites where that data used to exist will have gone offline due to lack of advertising dollars that was siphoned away by AI responses. Give it time and we'll have the internet go to a wealth of information on how to fix almost anything yourself to a place where you're constantly funneled to buy something new. I know people think it is like that now but you can find the data today. As AI siphons off all the advertising money keeping those sites alive they'll all have to shut down. The death of access to information via advertising.
 
Complete coincidence, another google fake intelligence anecdote: my mother wanted to visit a museum today, searches via her phone's browser. I visit the museum's website directly. Google's force-fed "ai" thingy (whatever they call it) claims the museum is open today, where the website prominently displays that it is closed.

Fundamental problem I observed: my mother didn't realize the information was generated. She knows very well that "ai" shit should be checked, but she was dark-patterned into thinking that the info was taken directly from the official website.

Recall Google also gets paid for people clicking search results, which are also a form of advertising revenue for them. This happens less and less now because people want an immediate answer (AI) rather than doing the extra step of clicking a blue link that may or may not contain the answer, and if it does they might not get to see it fast enough for their liking.

Lately, though, I find myself tending to go directly to the source whenever possible. Wikipedia, wictionary, my home country's traditional media, reddit, forums, websites provided via business cards or leaflets, etc.
 
I've been using Brave for years. I don't plan on stopping unless the company goes belly up.
