Keeping to its schedule of releasing an update to Chrome every six to eight weeks, Google has released the 9th version of Chrome this week. Included with the release of standard updates for the browser will a few add-ons to enhance the browsing experience.

The new stable build – Chrome 9.0.597.84 – also patches nine bugs, one deemed "critical" and the other rated "high" priority, a lower rating than critical

I don't know what I would do without Chrome these days even if all the sites aren't 100% functional in some instances.

Hmm, cant remember when i last used 9 :D Been on 10 for a while ;)

good to see it being released to the public through

You know what I love about chrome? I never know I'm running the newest version.

The patching system is so perfect. - You never see it.

haha so true. After I read the article I looked to see what version I was running and it was already version 9. I love my chrome browser :) One of my favorite features is basic and simple, but its the auto sync feature with bookmarks. I use a lot of computers and this feature is just too awesome without having to install addons or anything. Also the speed of chrome is amazing.

Been on 11 for a little while now. It's worth switching to, though I'd recommend installing fresh rather than upgrading. Nearly completely gave up on Chrome, though, with all the stuff that Google does to it before it's released to the public... until someone mentioned Chromium.

Holy crap. Totally what it needs to be. Chrome vs Chromium is the difference between having a browser you'd use alongside another... and using it exclusively. They really should just be releasing Chromium as-is to the public instead.

Love Chrome! All my friends and family members are using Chrome now as well...

A feature that both IE and Firefox has that I can't do without.

Set opening page to open maximized. Once in the maximized page though, opening a new link in a new window (right clicking link and choosing open link in new window) results in the new webpage not opening maximized. To make it do so, close all other webpages except the one not maximized. Drag that one to full size, hold CTRL and close webpage. Once this is done all future opening in a new window will open maximized.

Last time I used Chrome it would not do this simple thing. An oversight I don't know but I un-installed it right after. That was many versions ago so I don't know if it will finally do this now. If it still doesn't, I won't even bother trying it again.

Yeah, I've been using Chrome 11 for a couple weeks now. The build numbers are flying and they recently just picked up the pace even more. They're going to release a new major version every 3 months.

Still doesn't support Windows 7 well. No tab previews in the task bar or built-in touch support, stuff that FF supports out of the box now in 4.

and extensions and tab management

Yea, I fiddled with Chrome 9 yesterday for a few hours and was shocked there was no equivalent to TabMixPlus still. Kinda ruins it for me.

Someone please tell me I'm missing something?

Chrome has had ad block plus for a while

Not even close to the same thing as Firefox's Ad Block Plus plugin.

The Firefox plugin prevents blocked items from even being downloaded, which speeds up page loads and reduces bandwidth usage. The Chrome plugin can only hide blocked items after the fact; those blocked items are still downloaded and processed even though they're hidden.

But Google doesn't really refer to Chrome 9 as Chrome 9. Now that it's releasing a new stable version of the browser every six to eight weeks, it prefers to think of Chrome as one single, ever-evolving thing.

This is how I think all software should work.

tab panorama is what i was talking about

If I could just have firefoxs bookmarks in chrome I would switch but chromes bookmark system pisses me off.

Nope. In the 2.0 release of AdBlock for Chrome ads are actually prevented from downloading.

Thank your for posting this. I was not aware of this excellent change to AdBlock!

All of the firefox 4 betas have been god awful slow for me. Chrome is my main browser (actually, chromium... same difference)

Great, had to uninstall 9.0.597.86 beta to get the final, would it really hurt to update it to final if its the exact same build (which brings me to, why I do that?).

People could always just use the portable version too, saves a lot of hassles when it comes to a new version and a potential "upgrade" - the portable one sits in an individual folder, does exactly what the installed version does, leaves nothing behind, and obviously it's "portable" so you can take it with you on a USB stick if you want.

Far more efficient... :)

I had no problem with Chrome. The only add-ons I use with FF is ScreenGrab which I use a ton, and Adblock which is the best thing on the internet since porn....and maybe Steam.

I also like the custom themes you can get to change the look of FF. Stuff like that is why I always come back to FF after trying Chrome or Opera for a while. I also have noticed a quirk or two when using Chrome on some websites. FF seems to be compitible with everything.

have you tried Beta 10? it feels faster than Chrome to me

Are there any big changes in 10 beta or is it more of a touch up? I might give it a shot just for a change of scenery.

I just tried 10, was pretty disappointed with 9 so I didn't bother to follow up with 10 until today. I will say that on some webpages it feels as quick as Chrome, but on some of the pages I visit often its still slower. Not sure why since the majority of people feel its pretty good overall. I'm satisfied with Chrome(chromium) 11 for now. Maybe the stable firefox 4 will bring improvements that I can see on my end.

Like others mention, its the addons keeping the techiest of internet users from abandoning firefox.... noscript is kind of needed, but adblock is hands down the best on FF. I haven't used chrome lately but if they get the addons thing working, along with the "fastest browser" claim.... THEN, just then will the mass of techies consider ditching firefox.

I've been using chrome as my primary browser for most of the last week, and I still prefer firefox
there are a lot of little things I just like better about it, most of them are probably just because I'm used to it
I do prefer chrome's management of closing tabs though

What about Firefox's tab management is better? I'm honestly curious, as a LONG TIME FF user (From Just before it went 1.0 on up to some time in to 4 ) and I can't wrap my head around it. Pull a tab off from FF to a new window and it reloads. Chrome keeps the content (Split process FTW! ) active and doesn't refresh. CTRL+SHIFT+T reopens tabs, not only does it keep the content, it keeps your spot on the page without reloading. (I over-close my tabs a wee bit too often. )

That problem has been fixed in Firefox 4. The tab doesn't reload when tearing or merging.

Same thing goes for Firefox 4, reopens closed tabs to the same position on the page.

What exactly is different? I didn't notice a single thing.

Config menus are simplified between the two versions I have here, less branding, less integration, no required installation, no auto updater, a lot faster overall.

I really wish they would add a real "Zoom Text Only" feature. Until then, no Chrome for me, great browser otherwise.
