Google is planning to build its own wireless network in Southeast Asia and Africa in areas that are totally without Internet access, utilizing frequencies presently reserved for TV networks. Google plans to use a variety of technologies to accomplish its plans including, but not limited to, satellite-based networks and blimps creating high altitude transmission platforms.

Connecting more people to the Web world-wide creates more potential users of its Web-search engine and other services such as YouTube and its Google Play media and app store. More than half of the world's population doesn't use the Web, particularly in developing nations, researchers say.

Dear Google,

As much as I care about the internet access of people in 3rd world countries *snerk* I'd really appreciate my first world problems and actually deploy your fiber to more cities (hint... the whole Silicon Valley/Bay Area would be super awesome!)

I think its a great idea. Communication leads to enlightenment and transfer of ideas. These countries will stay 3rd world if those things are not addressed.

Wonder why the world sees USA arrogant.. Well Sfsuphysics you are a great example.

Two things.

They are going to those countries because they are using airwaves that are locked down here by the FCC and not so much any altruism.

However, its understandable to expect some love here in the US since we end up contributing the most through google ads which we ultimately pay for via prices passed along for those ads on products we buy.

lol, I'm happy for the internet, love it, but it certainly doesn't lead to enlightenment.

They are aware that the countries they are going into are broke and won't be buying anything. Right?

Doesn't this violate the prime directive?

To hell with it!
