Google Making A Phone?

Is Google looking to get into the phone market? Would you even buy a Google phone? With all the money Google has, wouldn’t it be smarter to just buy a cell phone company they liked?

"Google is experimenting with a few wireless communications systems including some completely novel concepts," according to the Web-site recruitment text. "We are building a small team of top-notch Logic Designers and Analog Designers aimed at nothing less than making the entire world's information accessible from anywhere for free."

This move did not suprise me. Prepare for an iphone killer.

I'd buy it over the iPhone that's for sure. I bet it would at least allow you to do what you wanted with it.

Unlike Apple, I doubt Google would charge $499-$599 for the phone. They'll probably have some way of working ads onto the phone.

I wouldn't buy the Google phone, nor the IPhone. I think both are stupid. Besides why would people stare at a tiny screen, just to browse a few pages?

Funny, how exactly is it an "iphone killer" when they mentioned no similar features besides both are phones?

I failed to read anything about having a built in ipod or touch screen or video playback.

I don't get why so many people are against apple on these boards. I'm no apple fan boy but it seems like people like to bash them a lot for no real reason. If you don't like their product, don't buy it.

Well, for me, it would be handy to view my helpdesk tickets while out on call, view my e-mail, and be able to view tech documents while onsite as well. All this without a laptop, which I don't own yet cause it's not practical.

Ockie didn't say anything bad about the iPhone. He just implied that Google's phone would be way better.

So you never bash something you don't like? I wouldn't say this forum does it for no real reason. Kyle and others aren't very fond of Apple though. :D

A lot of people have used something made by Apple, but no company produces all good products. I have a Video iPod and I really like it. On the other hand, I really hate Mac keyboards and mice.

I can't stand Chrysler PT Cruisers, Chevy HHPs, the front ends of Dodge trucks/Durangos/etc., and others, and still I like to call out their ugliness. I don't do it randomly and for no reason, but where applicable I voice my opinion from hands-on experience. The problem is when people do it out of ignorance or bandwagoning.

They are not creating a phone. They are creating a wireless network for devices to utilize and obtain information from.

That statement was more of a general one and not just directed at Ockie.

And what I meant was how could it be an iPhone killer if they don't have the same features and are targeted for different people?

Would you say that a new Tundra is a Civic killer? They both enable you to get around (talk/view web) but otherwise are completely different.

First Sentence said:
Rumors have been circulating in blogosphere for some time about the U.S. search-engine giant studying the possibility of designing its own phone

But you aren't entirely wrong, not that anything is factual at this point. The article suggests that Google will work with another company to develop the phone/device.

Calm down. It's a slang term. And you're using a synecdoche. The whole is that they're both phones, which means they're open to be compared.

I won't look if you want to huddle in a corner and hug your Macbook.

I see plenty of motivation for Google to create a wireless network with free access. To make it happen they would need to create the proper hardware to modulate and demodulate the analog signals. They will probably develop that aspect in shop and then sell chips to phone makers. I think the articles are misleading since the information from Google does not imply anything about making a phone.

Either way, I really like the idea of "free" wireless phone service.

But you said, sternly, "They are not creating a phone," which can't be stated at this point since nothing is confirmed.

P.S. Adverbs are bad :p

o_O lol what? Your whole comment made me laugh.

The only piece of Mac equipment I own is an iPod Nano I got for Christmas.

I'm just pointing out that while they are both phones (vehicles), they share no other features such as music/video playback or multi-touch.

Whats with all the personal attacks? Wake up on the wrong side of the bed today?

So would you compare.. say a Blackberry 8700g with a Nokia 2610? Sure you could, but with their different features and price-points, how would you rank them? IMHO it would be a useless comparison expect for basics like messaging, and sound quality since they are some of the shared features.

There are different uses for different phones. They are targeted for different people. Trucks are designed for work and hauling/moving goods around. Cars are designed for general travel. They are both vehicles with 4 wheels, a motor, frame/body, doors, windows, etc. You can't compare them just like you can't really compare phones designed for business vs those designed for chatting.

We have no idea if google is making a phone, nor what features it could have, so we can't say it would be ___________ "killer". Where that blank is anything from basic to advanced PDA like phones.

Anyway, continue on bashing me if you like, no point posting here if you are just going to resort to flames.

I haven't made any attacks. If you would like me to, I could easily attack your analogy-based arguments.

Back to square one, Ockie is entitled to possibly suggesting dislike for Apple or the iPhone. And I just went back to the first several posts and no one is outright bashing Apple or the iPhone. You're over-reacting, and I bet you're gonna take that as an attack.
