Exactly what I was thinking when I saw the story the other day. Why do people need to be "plugged in" all the time. What is it with this fascination with augmented reality when people can't even deal with real reality?

So how annoying will this be when you're trying to have a face-to-face conversation with someone who is wearing this? Also can't wait to see how drivers would handle it.

Seems like this would be useful for police / soldiers who need constant data streams, but the average person doesn't need this much info all the time - most users can do just as well with a smart phone.

I see what they're trying to say, but I doubt it'll be this way. The screen on the device is not obstructing your view, and even if it was further down in front of your eye, you still have the other eye unobstructed.

Unless you are partially blind, or have vision issues. How does this work with people that need to wear glasses?

That would make invasion of privacy easier for google ;)

But building a profile about you makes the ads you see more relevant and more useful to you! People who pick privacy over advertising are sick and shouldn't be part of society. :p

This^
And we all know that they'll have to make a law against using them while driving because of all the idiots out there.
Famous last words... "Yup, this is sooo much safer than texting/web browsing on a smart phone while driv...OH NO! FULL PAGE AD!".

I'm curious to see how this technology would be used to change behavior. Can we expect fields of our visual view blocked out, if we happen to see something "Big Brother" doesn't want us to see?

Then again, it would make sleeping with ugly chicks easier. Tired of sleeping with your fat, ugly wife, just run your porn star overlay, and you're good to go.

Went back and read the article and watched the video and the first thing I thought was bye bye to privacy. You would be nuts to think that Google would not feed that sort of information directly to advertisers. Couple in Facebook/google+ and it just gets scary.

And did you actually see the pole? the person? everything else in the video other than the monitor? Because I sure as fuck did see all that stuff, the reason I did see it is because I was actively looking at that part of the image. The point being is if you were actively looking at the screen you're distracted and your brain does not pick up everything else, this is akin to talking on the cell phone when driving yeah your vision isn't impaired but you can very easily be distracted and not be paying attention to what is in full sight with no obstructions.

Agreed. I think I'd have to start punching people. Bluetooth headsets already annoy the crap out of me. I understand if you're at a call desk or a receptionist or something like that, but everyday use annoys the hell out of me and this thing would be worse.

All the videos of people hurting themselves; because they're using it when they should be paying attention to what they're doing, will be funny though.

I have not read most of the posts on this thread just can not be bothered.

Do we need this ? please take time to think about it. OK its going to be done anyway.

Would you like to know about that person at your left, right, in-front or the person 100 yards behind ? are they A, B, C, D group ? Extra charge for a list of their recent "Open buys online"

I find this dive down the digital hole sad, frightening and a push too far.

Funny video. I think this will be some pretty cool tech. I am worried about the safety though. I don't put much stock in my fellow human beings, especially on the road. If you saw what I saw on my commute, I think you'd agree.

Agreed

I can't think of any reason why this is necessary. I don't need to have additional digital information shown in my view all the time. If I want to read something I'll look at it. If I'm walking or driving, then I'd like to have 100% view of my surrounding.

I can already envision it. When you're driving it will function like a HUD with relevant information being displayed, navigational ques being given, etc. When you come to a stop light, let the adverts begin! Stop light specific advert targeting. You're at a stop light that's w/i 500 yds of an In-N-Out's, boom pop a juicy burger ad up to entice you.

Uh, yeah. Well there is this thing called Google car so wtf else you going to do while your car drives you around?

I am for it. Think of the apps. Like morph my wife into a supermodel? That would make things more fun.

If I wanted to price match, I just run the Red Laser app on my iPhone and scan an item. If I needed directions, my iPhone can help me there too. Ditto making calls. Ditto texting. My car's GPS can handle mapping my travels in unfamiliar places.

I'm good, thanks anyways Google.

Good point, and I'm sure these won't be free, so everyone who buys one will have paid to be an unpaid soldier in Google's research army.
It may be cool tech, but it will come with a price higher than the actual dollar amount paid for the device, the privacy of all in your field of vision. I'm sure there's more. :(

There are few items truly necessary to any human being. Water, food, oxygen, and the occasional medicine are among those necessary items. That doesn't mean there is no desire for things which don't fall into those aforementioned categories.

These things have potential use. In scenarios where you don't want to use it, you are free not to. I don't see a problem here.

Or the glasses could take care of all of it.

Hmm, carry a bunch of stuff or wear a single item?

I'm only carrying one item - my iPhone. The GPS is built into my car's dash board.
