We have all read about the amazing perks that Google employees receive, and you can now add mass transit to the list as well.

In Silicon Valley, a region known for some of the worst traffic in the nation, Google, the Internet search engine giant and online advertising behemoth, has turned itself into Google, the mass transit operator. Its aim is to make commuting painless for its pampered workers--and keep attracting new recruits in a notoriously competitive market for top engineering talent.

Man Google just opened an office down the road not to long ago....I wonder if we get those perks in Pittsburgh. I need a job there too. :D ;)

Google employees get paid less than the national average for the industry, but people are lining up to work for them because of all the perks. I guess the benefits outweigh the costs.

When you consider how much time you spend at work, the sacrifice in pay (especially for a single person) does not seem at all significant given the pleasant environment. Plus, as mentioned in the article, buses save workers a lot of time and money, give them back as much as 2 hours of their day, and allow them to live in areas with cheaper housing. Not to mention the health benefits of walking/biking to the stops (or scootering). Plus, free food and premium health coverage, especially if it extends to family members (this is even more important in a two earner household), are not to be overlooked. I am still covered under my parents health insurance, and it is terrible, and we have to decline medically recommended procedures due to cost.

I'd gladly take a little less pay for all these perks plus benefits and 401K.

Benefits are where it's at (though I'd personally get a Roth IRA, whatevs). If Google offered tuition reimbursement, I'd be all over them like a monkey on a cupcake.

Their building here in Pittsburgh is literally a spit from Carnegie Mellon Univ. They obviously know how to recruit. ;)

And I agree with you. You have to factor in all these perks. You are really making double or three times what you take home at the end of the week.

Hopefully they won't be downsized when the stockholders whine that their value hasn't doubled in the last couple years.
